Default Just a little something I found to be a little disconcerting

...that I was thinking about lately, with VI/SonyEQ putting out information regarding EQ2 as early as they have, I feel that they might be setting us up to be let down easy regarding EQ currently. With EQ2 release date about 12 months away, it seems that SonyEQ may be looking at the current EQ setup and servers and be considering them for use with EQ2 and either shut down all or some of the current EQ servers.
I would venture to say, VI/SonyEQ has in deed made quite a large sum of money, but I donít know if I would go as far to say they have made enough to support and entirely new game, server wise. Any of you wizened players out there agree, or disagree? Has anyone heard anything to back this up? I wasnít around when EQ first hit the streets so I ask you older players, did SonyEQ mention a set date of closure when it first went live?
Any information on this would seriously put me at ease either way I must grudgingly admit.

Holy @#%$, I just answered my own question by finding this post!

pub95.ezboard.com/fbattle...=207.topic

and I quote:
Guess what is getting @#%$ canned in EQ? You guessed it. The mental giants at Verant(SOE) decided they will kiss EQ goodbye because we're all going to SWG and EQ2.

well, that settles it.

There was a direct post on Castersrealm, I thought that stated they would keep EQ up as long as they had players that want to play... if my memory is right, that's pretty close to what was said....

Perhaps they are making us not want to play.

In any case, Really really sad. Bad form for Varent. Shame on you all.

My prediction is that instead of server splits, we will soon see server consolidations, wherein the lower populated servers are transferred together to be one new server...

Ever notice that you aren't playing EQ on the same PC that you started playing EQ on?

Why?

Original PC couldnt handle it anymore...it is obsolete. If you are still using it, you have probably upgraded it to the point where the only piece that is the same is the power cord or you are using it to bot secondaries.

The same thing happens on the other end. Those servers that they are running EQ on, wont be able to handle EQ2 or SWG.

As far as software support and new expansions for EQ...They are not going to turn off something that is profitable, period.

Even if EQ2 starts to falter and lose money, they wont lower support for EQ to get people to move unless EQ1 is losing more money, then they will probably offer something for people to switch, like an extra free month of play.

SoE has already proven that they are in this for the money and not the 'Vision'.

SoE won't kill EQ until your fellow players leave for something else.

You know, its amazing how little of what you read is really believable...

Amuse me for a moment while I create a story for you... Now lets say I make the best white bread in the world. Now I decide I am going to start making whiter white bread. Oooh and maybe wheat bread as well. Am I going to stop making my original amazing white bread and pray that everyone will switch to my new whiter white bread, or am I going to make all 3 and hope that more people will start buying my new whiter white bread and wheat bread as well as my old white bread..... Hey, maybe I will even offer a package deal and get people to buy one package with all 3 types of bread for slightly less than they could buy each separately, yeah not everyone is going to like any one type of my bread, but if we all get together and have a party, everyone will have a type of bread they like.

Default maybe it's already started...

With all these posts recently (one paticular here) about servers being locked for no reason, maybe the migration is already begun. Maybe instead of combining whole servers, wouldn't it be easier to just 'physically' rearange the drives and place two servers on one piece of equipment? Then the process of logging into your specific server would be just pure symantics? This assuming they DO have equipment available to support EQ2 and SWG etc. I visit some class specific boards too, and I have read several independent posts regarding other servers being 'mysteriously' locked for an amount of time....
(cue Twilight Zone theme......)

One day the first grade teacher was reading the
story of Chicken Little to her class. She came
to the part of the story where Chicken Little
tried to warn the farmer. She read, "....
and so Chicken Little went up to the farmer and
said, " The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"
The teacher paused then asked the class, "And
what do you think that farmer said?"
One little girl raised her hand and said,
"I think he said: 'Holy Sh|t! A talking chicken!'"
The teacher was unable to teach for the next 10
minutes.

This might make sense, unless you're old like me and can remember back to the day when Coca-Cola decided to introduce "New Coke" and in the process took the old version off the market. After much public outcry and hording of "Old Coke", Coca-Cola reintroduced the old product to the market place. There was much speculation as to possible Machiavellian underpinnings.

My advice is never underestimate the tunnel vision and single mindedness of most corporate personalities when chasing "profit"

Someone on CR suggested checking VI/SOE's BBB rating and details. Well out of 104 formal complaints to the BBB 102 of the complaints were closed due to customer satisfaction. I'd say that's pretty good CS. Add to the fact the response from VI/SOE officially and the origianl "rant" is nothing more than a disgruntled former volunteer.
All my dealings with both guides and GM's have been helpful, and at the most, petitions have taken no more than 2 hours for a response.

I think the Sky is Falling story is apt in this case to discribe what you guys are doing. The sky isn't falling. They aren't going to close down shop as long as that shop is bringing in a profit.

For example in the city I live in we have a grocery store chain. The same people run a chain of huge warehouse style store (there are 4 of them) and also a nice small town feel family store (there are about 12 of them). Why do they do this you ask? Well because some people like to go to the store and pay less so they can bag thier own stuff. Other people want to go in and have people bag it for them and carry it all out to thier cars and put it in there for them. Do you think they are going to say to hell with one and just go with the other? No they aren't why? Because they have the best of both worlds. They are pulling in more people then they would have had they only had one type of store.

VI will still be making a profit on us via EQ while SWG and EQ2 are live. Different market different clientel. Don't run around yelling the sky is falling. Take a deep breath VI is going to be happy to take our money for a long long time.

Even if EQ2 takes off on time I seriously DOUBT enough people will want to go out and buy the necessary hardware upgrades to support it. Its gonna take some time AND to those of you that mentioned VI isnt gonna close shop on something that is making them money (i.e. EQ 1) I would have to agree =). There was an article in PC Gamer that stated the requirements to support EQ2....it was ridiculous! I would be interested to see if someone can find that article or something listing the specs.
