Default Windows XP Pro...problem?

I have an issue with Windows XP+EQ. It's not a big problem, was just curious if anyone else has experienced it and if so did you(and how did you) fix it.

When I load EQ sometimes(1 out of 6 or 7 times) when it gets to the character selection screen the mouse and the keyboard simply lock up. I have to "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" and bring up the task manager...Now when I have the task manager up, it does not list EQ as a running file. It's like when I do that it dumps EQ completely, so it brings up the task manager with no running files in it, or at least none EQ related.

Every now and again it will do this 4 or 5 times in a row and is very annoying, anyone know of a way to make it quit that? =)

Thanks in advance.

Kogur,

I've had it happen on Windows 2000 Professional as well.

My solution has been to kill everything in the system tray first. Usually works. Oh, and don't move the mouse when DirectX is loading, or when the pre-load stuff is happening.

Your mileage may vary,

Oh...

Supporting evidence for the DirectX assertion:

The lock-up usually happens by the time you get to the character select screen. DirectX is already loaded by then (the spinning textures and whatnot).

Happens to me too with XP Home. I thought it was just unique to my system but went to a friend's house who was running XP Home also and had the same thing happen. Seems pretty random.

Happens to me as well. Culprit identified as Nortons Anti-Virus. It only happens to me after NAV has done a full system scan and I do not reboot before entering EQ. If I reboot after the scan this never happens.

HTH.

XP Prof here as well, no Norton of any kind, no AntiVirus. Happens as well.

Also experience a loss of keyboard input reaching the game if I LD sometimes. Have to use the mouse to quit completely out of EQ and restart the game ( keyboard works fine outside of EQ ).

I occasionally have the exact same problem. Maybe once in every ten times I load EQ. Mouse pointer locks up in the top left hand corner of the screen and I have to Ctrl/Alt/Delete. XP Pro as well.

Default Bill Gates

Microsoft and Sony are aware of the this and the Crash to desktop issue. I cant remember where I read it. It may have been on the MS knowledge base. The bottom line is the either arent or cant get a solution to the problem. If indeed it is a DX problem well see what happens with DX9. You can be brave and try the beta.

I used to get that a lot. I then uninstalled EQ and then just copied the whole directory from another system into my games directory (yours may be in Program files) and now it just doesnt happen much at all I think its happend maybe 3 times in month and a half.

Good Luck

The only way arround it that I know of is to run EQW, when that happens minimize the window and when you come back to it it is fixed.

Sorry I don't have a better solution

I've only had this problem for about a month now...had xp installed a bit longer...

Same issue...mouse stuck in upper left corner...keyboard is dead once the game reaches the character screen. I cannot even ctrl-alt-del my way out and just do a nice reset.

This only happens for me under two conditions:

1. I go LD and get dumped to the server screen...when I head back to char screen its locked up.
2. When I am logging from one account to another on the same machine, it will lock up about a quarter of the time.

I will have to try DX9 now...been debating on installing the beta for a couple weeks.
