Default Dwarkarn - Vegemite

Two little Kraft jam-like mini containers spawned in my office today before lunch and they both said "Vegemite" on them. I thought "Thats weird, since when did Kraft make jelly and jam?" Under the two Vegemite containers was a piece of paper that said "Vegemite is a product from Australia. It is a salty spread you put on your bread. People there eat it by the masses. If bread is showing, they haven't put enough on." and at the bottom in big bold letters "If you are new to Vegemite, it is recommended you try it in small quantities."

So lunch came later and I just happened to come across a free bread roll in the cafeteria. Then I remembered the Vegemite. I picked up one of the two jam-like containers and used one of my little plastic knives to spread a little bit on. It tasted like, well... very very THICK soy sauce... or that spread sauce they put in those, erm, wrap-like things you get in Chinese Restaurants (the name fails me, even though I used to get them a lot). I put the stuff in the trash can there after. I guess its an aquired taste.

Dwarkarn, you say you're from Australia. Do you really use this stuff? O.o

England has its own similar product called Marmite....

After tasting it for the first time I told me wife (who is a brit),

"now i know why britain's armies ruled the world for years- so they would never have to come back home and eat the food!"

Default Not Dwarkarn but another aussie's answer.

You grow up on it in Australia usually, I know I did! (I miss it )

To foriegners I do suggest it is an acquired taste, people expect it to taste like jam or some sort of spread they know and have tasted already, it's not.

Vegemite on toast with butter. Yum!

Ingredients look something like this:

Vegemite: (Kraft General Foods NZ Ltd)
Yeast extract, salt, malt extract, colour(caramel), vegetable flavours, vitamins (niacin, thiamine, riboflavin)
Marmite: (Sanatarium Health Food Company, NZ)
Yeast, sugar, salt, wheatgerm extract, mineral salt (508) colour(caramel), herbs, spices, vitamins (niacin, thiamin, riboflavin)
Marmite: (CPC (UK) Ltd)
Yeast Extract, Salt, Vegetable Extract, Vitamin: Niacin, Spices, Vitamins: B1, B2, Folic Acid, B12
Promite: (Masterfoods of Australia)
Vegetable protein extract, sugar, yeast, natural colour(caramel) salt, thickener (Wheat starch), emulsifier (Glycerol monostearate) spices, added vitamins, water

"Yeast Extract" by the way is basically the scraping from the bottom of the beer barrel. Hehehe....

You didn't know that Vegemite was used in Australia?

"I said do you speak'a my language?
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich
And he said
'I come from a land down under'..... <yadda yadda yadda>"

Talking RE: Vegemite

Hail,

Hahahah Theo.
I had that on LP waaay back in the day. Doh! Think I just dated myself. I've always wanted to try it, ever since I first heard that song.

By the way, if you quote the song, you should at least credit the band....MEN AT WORK. Only two albums I'm aware of that did any kind of US sales. "Cargo" and "Business as Usual".

Take care,
Frekkels

I was seeing who else remembered by not crediting it.

You were first Frekkels.

And yeah, we're dating ourselves.

I wish I could of caught you before you ate it, I would of advised you strongly against the stuff, it tastes like salty road tar. That being said unfortunately 80% or so of the population loves it, I don't know why.

I know for certain it is available in the US but only at some specialty import shops, what they are called and where they are I don't know.

Default Marmite and Vegamite

I was brought up on Marmite sandwiches. I know it has a rather strong taste, but it is actually really good if you try it this way ...

As a sandwich ...

Marmite (or Veg.) - just a thin, thin spread on both pieces bread
Cream Cheese - however want much you, also on both pieces of bread
Sliced Cucumber

mmmmm ... oh damn, now I have the craving ...

Anyways, it is indeed an acquired taste ... but I have found that this sandwich has swayed many a non-marmity-type person

When I was in college my best friend picked that she would like a foriegn roommate. She being one of the most blessed people I have ever known gets her first roommate an Aussy girl. She was so cool and so much fun and brought Vegimite over with her and got us all addicted to it on toast just like you said.

At semester break she went back and she got another aussy girl again very cool very nice. We had a great time taking them both sledding and out to play in the snow. They had a great time teaching us how to really drink.

Smile Off topic but...

Speaking of Men at Work (love those guys, yes I own the Business as Usual LP and Cargo was the first cassette I ever owned) did anyone see Colin Haye (sp) on that NBC sitcom, Scrubs? He appeared as a patient playing an acoustic version of Overkill (from the LP Cargo) that was just awesome. There is actually a Scrubs soundtrack with the song on it....

and vegemite is nasty to look at, not much better eating...

Marmite >>> Vegemite
Better, stronger flavour; smoother texture.

(IMHO )

That does it. I'm gonna do a Men of Work song next time I'm at karaoke. I figured no one but me would get a kick out of it, but from the response to this thread, it appears I'm wrong.

Talking Theo Karaoke

Hail Theo,

I'm tempted to recommend the Men At Work song "It's a mistake" for you. But I've heard your singing voice, so I'm sure you could pull any of them off with flair and skill.

Dangit, now I have to go dig out the cassette I made of Cargo on one side and Business As Usual on the other. Haven't listened to that stuff in ages. AND hunt down some Vegemite!

Take care,
Frekkels

Marmite's advertising slogan used to be "Marmite - you either love it or you hate it". The best part was that they were exactly right - I've never met someone who didn't have strong feelings about Marmite in one direction or the other.

Personally I love the stuff - the trick is not to use too much.

Default Marmite

I am a New Zealander and have been eating Marmite since before I could walk. My favourite has always been toasted Marmite sandwiches or Marmite and potato chip sandwichs. I recommend that you should try this, do not use too much Marmite, a very thin spread is enough.

Also, In Australia and New Zealand we put a thin layer of butter on all of our sandwiches, erhaps this makes the marmite taste les strong and more smooth.

Like anything, you get use to certain foods, in my parents day they regularly ate tripe, liver, brains etc - it was noraml practice on new Zealand farms.

To each thier own I say.
