![]() In a show about addictions. On 48hrs. I am sure they will just be biased about it and show that guy who shot himself. But might be worth a look for all you EQ'ers. www.cbsnews.com/stories/1...2761.shtml Ragaz <60 Shadow Knight long since dead> |

My mom called me and told me to watch it, I wish i knew the mother of the man who shot himself. I would smack her blaming a game on her sons mental problems. I laughted my ass off when they showed the guy with two pc's, I was thining "Dam thats most of us out there, hehe". Sony, if your reading this and she sues you, get me as a witness just so i can laugh at her. Making excuses for her sons mistakes. Makes me sick, just like blaming metal music on the colorado shootings...pfftt |

Coverage like this was one of the main reasons I made my documentary "Avatars Offline". I contacted Peter Henderson, producer of the segment, and he seemed very receptive to the fact that Online Gaming isn't an "ALL ADDICTION, ALL THE TIME" type of affaire. We talked about the postive aspects. Unfortunatly, network news seems to go for that one angle only. Another missed opportunity. Too bad, really. |

I agree with that. The problem with America today is that people blame others for their problems instead of handling them theirselves. Its really sad. |

I guess there's no such thing as objective reporting, anymore. I didn't watch the show, but I heard enough people talking about it that it made me sick. Reminded me of Diane Sawyer's interview with Sammy "The Bull" Gravano. I know the guy was a murderer, but I have a feeling that the only reason she was being so accusatory and condemning was to boost her image. Now all the saps on this show can feel so self-important for blaming this game for some guy taking his life. What a joke. |

I was playing EQ while watching this and was thinking that woman is just trying to find something to blame for that which she couldn't do right, that was raise her son to feel like he mattered and to respect himself. Blame displacement, escapegoating, that's what I saw. I think the game is addictive, but more so than the game itself it is the relationships you build in it. I've been seriously considering leaving and did leave for a short while. I came back but even though I got some things I wanted for my characters during this time, I've been thinking it's time to find something else to do. I will play but not with the same zeal and dreams I had about the game. I've seen the good and the bad in the game, which has little to do with the game itself it's more about the people who play it, they make it good or bad. I like the characters and I like playing "dress up" with them, but interaction with other people is what makes it or breaks it for me. Sometimes the interactions are great and everything works like a fine tuned machine, other times there's a breakdown. I will seriously cut down my time in EQ, I will do raids and whatever but not going to pursue the end like I did. I got there and it was anti-climatic. If this wasn't a multi player game I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't fight so hard to reach 60. Playing something that becomes increasingly harder and more tedious as a stand alone, vs computer game, wouldn't keep you hooked as EQ does. http://www.geocities.com/roednt.geo/EQ/Jowilclair.jpg Wilerili Jorfe Clairesy |

Everquest Widows (48 hrs) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Watching 48hrs tonight as they talked about addictions and how EQ is one. Well i would have to say they couldnt be closer to the truth. Hell yes EQ is addicting and it will suck you in just like a big fat line of toot or a hit of crack. I know i sat in front of this computer for over 2 years day in and day out playing EQ i missed many days of work and i am sure many of you have to. How many of you know people who neglect home life (husbands, wifes, kids) or have lost their jobs over the game? And for the guy who killed himself in front of EQ well i cant say it was the games fault cause he was probably a little wacked in the first place but hell i know my feelings have been hurt and i have been really pissed off about @#%$ on the game. But i would have to say to his mom it was something much bigger then EQ to make him blow his brains out. I guess what i am getting at is that people who say that EQ isnt addicting need to wake up and look around because it sure the hell is. Now maybe most of the people who play can do it on occasion but their are hundreds who probably need something major to happen for them not to play for long periods of time. And it is sad that people need a support group such as Everquest Widows to help them get threw a day couping with their loved ones and EQ /em shakes her head. I loved EQ and my friends i met here but i am glad i could get away from it and give RL a try cause its pretty dam good. LOL i guess i am not to far away from it i still read these boards daily but hell i dont miss work over em. I am not saying gameing is bad but its just like any thing good you have to do it in MODERATION!! And i hope when Star Wars comes out i can practice what i preach. Razz 1.0 |

![]() I keep hearing this voice... sounds oddly like Darth Vader... *gurgle* EVER *rasp**gurgle* QUESSS *rasp* SSST *gurgle* I wonder if Ben Stein knows yet that some of the most l33t firewall hackers in our nation are hiding in boarding schools.... Was interesting... but skewed... what main stream media does best! However... maybe enough accounts now will be taken away to clear up some of that lag in the bazaar? ![]() Also interesting that Sony/VI added the play timer recently, in light of the bad press I guess they have to cover their asses, how strange, I'm betting that back in '99 even the original design team never dreamed EQ would grow to it's current proportions (or notoriety). Wonder if any of the multi-player games which will be following EQ will repeat the performance... |

![]() Its amazing how people dress up to say they love this game and they call us addicts and then people dress up to say they love football and can't miss one game... and they call those people "fans". |

![]() People need to stop calling everything an "addiction" just because they are too weak willed to control their behavior. I have known people who destroyed their lives because of addiction to drugs and alcohol and, let me tell you something, if you want to compare eating, shopping or Everquest with the nightmare that is true, chemical, addiction, you are tragically naive. This new-age BS pseudo psychology crap is just another example of how ridiculous our culture is becoming. Labeling what amounts to nothing more than extreme immaturity and a lack of self-control as an "addiction" does everyone a disservice because it provides people with a crutch and a rationalization for their self-destructive behavior. Spend some time with a methodone addicted recovering heroin addict and then tell me that EQ is a "real addiction". Give it a rest already. Anyone who has found themselves ruining their lives for Everquest had better take it as a wakeup call and find a psychiatrist immediately before their addictive personality leads them to a REAL problem. |

![]() Ealan you are so full of BS and i to have been around chemical addictions and i have alwso been around people with eating problems, my sister for one who about threw all her stomach up. I have been with gambiling addicts etc etc. Their are so many addictions other than chemical ones and for you to disagree with that is sooo wrong. There is two kind of addictions you should go read about one being a physical and the other being a mental. Razz 1.0 |

![]() Yeah because football fans watch their players beat eachother up and cause physical pain, but thats alright. We just play an online game which in and of itself does no harm to anyone physically (people who lose things over EQ have problems to begin with) and lets it's players "get away" is a bad thing. I guess next we start burning books, eh? They're all messages from the devil if you read them upside down. :rollin: edit - Thank you Llunes for the compliment. I appreciate it. |

![]() Sorry Razz but Ealan is right. The ONLY type of addiction is physical. Mental addiction is a myth created to make many people who do not want to control themselves an excuse for their actions and a "case" for psych's to charge you 80 bucks an hour to help you with your "addiction". When you take a drug like Heroin or crack etc. and then stop taking it you begin to have physical distress. That is what addiction is. The PHYSICAL reliance on a substance to lessen PHYSICAL distress from lack of said substance. Everquest is not an addiction nor is it addicting in any way. YOU choose when to play. YOU choose when to not play. YOU choose to quit. YOU choose to not quit. With drugs YOU CANNOT CHOOSE to stop the physical distress caused by not taking the drug anymore. In everquest YOU CAN CHOOSE to stop and have it cause you no distress. It is simply up to YOU and YOUR will. It all breaks down to this. EQ is NOT addicting. People play cause they CHOOSE to not because some force is making them do it. Could I quit EQ. You can bet the farm safely that I can. If I decide my entertainment time is better spent doing something else I would be gone in a Heartbeat. At the moment EQ is still quite fun to me so I see my time spent on EQ as quality entertainment time. |

...other than to say, the stimulus the brain gets from physical drugs can be re-created by a mental situation. After all, it comes down to the stimuli that your brain recieves that is addicting... in mental, physical, emotional, and social behavorial addictions. There are many books on the subject. is smoking a habit...or an addiction? does someone who chews their nails constantly and dont realize they are doing it (even when told to stop) have a habit....or a mental addiction? does someone who is obsessed with things having to be absolutley clean have a habit..........or a mental and/or social addiction? or is a habit..... really a lesser form of an addiction? |
