Default WIN XP question

How many of you are running Windows XP and what are your chip speeds, RAM and Video card types/speeds, please? What are you having problems with and what are you pleased with regarding your systems? I am trying to convince my wife that we need a bigger, better, faster, stronger computer and when I whine enough and get my way, I need to have an idea of what I need to be looking for to make the purchase as painless as possible for her.
Currently I have a 3 year old running Win98se, a 500, 256 of PC100 RAM and a 32MB Video Card.
Thanks in advance!

I am running Win XP Pro on a AMD Athlon XP 1800+(1.53Ghz), two sticks of 512MB Cruicial DDR 133(266) 184-pin RAM, VisionTech Geforce 4 Ti-4600 and an ABIT KR7A-Raid, two IBM deskstar 60gpx 60GB drives. Nothing is over clocked.

With all modles enabled, 1280x1024 and 4 times antialliassing on, I have no lag unless 30+ people are on the screen or I am in UP.
With all char modles off I never lag.

I have not been to PoP so I really do not know how that would be.

Hope that helps.

GF4 440 , 20 gig 7200 HDD.
Cable conection.

i have little or no lag (never run new models)

Im running..

Pentium 4 1.5ghz
1gb RDram
Geforce 3 64mb DDR
40gb 7200rpm Drive
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Cable Modem
Windows Xp Pro

I would not recomend less then 256 ram for windows xp. And if you want to game, 512 is min! Memory is Extremely cheap.

Windows Xp uses about 1gb+ of HD Space.

Unless you plan on building your own..

I would check out (/shudder) Dell and/or Gateway's..

Being that time of year again (holdidays) ..im sure both will be having some kind of deals. Not to mention with the new line out CPU's out shortly prices on the 2GHz models will be dropping drastically.

A basic system from either would be :

2Ghz + CPU speed
64 Meg Video Card
256 Megs of DDRSDRam
~20G HDD
etc etc..
all around $800.oo

now if you plan on building your own..hehe, you can expect to pay a little more(but will be that much faster)
3.0Ghz CPU *should be out next month*
ATI Radeon 9700 128Meg Video
1G RDRam *faster than DDRSD but more expensive*
Seagate 76G 10000RPM Ultra160 SCSI Cheetah SCA80
(drools)
DVD Rom Burner *allthough I would wait until the industry sets a standard*

alot of what your askin comes down to how big your wallet at the time is. Remember christmas is around the corner and prices from Dell and Gateway will be adjusting accordingly...especially when the Intel 3GHz CPU hits the shelves.

If cash flow for the ultimate in systems is a little tight, check out those deals from places like best buy or circuit city where you pay no interest for a year or two.

Hope that helps
....

<----goes to try the whine technique for a 3GHz CPU..muahahaha

oh..and if your really serious about purchasin a new one straight up for ~$800, and didnt plan on building it yourself...

check this thread out

pub4.ezboard.com/femarrge...0949.topic

bout halfway down, Bubu is selling a few it seems he has left over for whatever reason. Complete with warranty. At a slightly discounted price.

Hell, you might even be able to strike a deal with him...after all, the longer he waits to get rid of them, the less amount of cash he will recieve because the less they will be worth..

Geforce 2 MX 64 meg
Gigabyte p4 titan 667 mo bo.

Runs Xp without a hitch.

I used to have a p3 866 mhz

I'm running a 933MHz P3 with 512MB RAM and a GeForce 2 64 DDR vid card. I run XP with no problems whatsoever. But, if you want to upgrade to XP, you should definitely upgrade your system first.

Lower end of the spectrum here:
Athlon 900, 384Mb PC133 RAM, GeForce 2 64Mb, SBLive! Run WinXP Pro without a hitch. Haven't had any dramas with it yet.

Default RE:

Jeez, looks like I really do need to upgrade!
Even you folks on 'the lower end' gots at least twice as much as I do! I really would like to buy a machine that has a modest HD, modest CPU but at least 512 RAM and a great (>64 MB) graphics card. I don't play with the sound on mostly, so sound card wouldnt matter. EQ is about the only game I play (other than Dungeon Siege, PvE).
Other than that, I mostly surf the internet (these dum boards), check email and do a little word processing for work once in a great while. A monitor? nope, I bought a 17" with my current computer that works good nuff.

thank you all for the information, I'll go see how to best put it to use!

Windows XP Pro
AMD AthlonXP 1700+ (1.46ghz)
512MB Pc133 SDRAM
GeForce3 ti200 w/64mb ddr
60GB Maxtor 7200rpm FDB drive
30GB WD 7200rpm drive
16x Yamaha cd-rw
16x Pioneer DVD-rom

Right now I have textures set to high, and as far as models go I only have Haffer, Dark-elf, Leezard, Vah-Shir, and I think Wood-Elf enabled, and I am experiencing some decent lag in the nexus and any Plane around the graveyard. For the most part it's alright and doesn't bother me, but I can't stand being near people nowadays. When I had textures set on medium the lag was a lot less, but I hate losing the quality.

If I could upgrade 2 things on my PC right now, I would upgrade to a new video card and go from 512mb SDRam to 512mb DDR. Would love to double that to a gig as well. My mobo accepts sdram or ddr, so I could do that, if I had money :P

If I could only upgrade 1 thing, it would be the video card. I might upgrade soon actually. Futureshop has that nice over the counter exchange warranty, so I could easily go replace it with something better :P
