/sigh...

And it looks like the telemarketers aren't wasting any time enjoying that. I've
gotten 3 calls so far this morning from them asking me to buy stuff, and lord
knows how many more calls I'll get by tonight. God our government SUCKS!

I wonder if the No Call List will now be subject to the Freedom of Information Act...

Majority never does and never has ruled on anything. Politicians that we elect and judges appointed by those politicians rule and always have.

The good news is in the linked article tho...

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Billy Tauzin, R-La., and Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., said Wednesday they were confident the ruling would be overturned and believe Congress did give the FTC the necessary authority. “We will continue to monitor the situation and will take whatever legislative action is necessary to ensure consumers can stop intrusive calls from unwanted telemarketers,” they said in a joint statement. The House committee authorized the list.

It seems that Congress is behind the No Call List and if the FTC doesn't currently have the athority, they will soon enough.

I watched the interview with that prick on MSNBC....

What's the fucking difference, if its a national no call registry or a registry that each company has its own private listing?

The difference is that it is more convenient for those being harrassed, to have a national registery that all the companies can have access to.

And why are they so against a do not call registry even if it is more convenient? Because they dont want any penalties levied against them because the fuckers are going to call anyway.

Sum Bitches.

If majority ruled in this country, we would have a different President.

But representive politics is even more convoluted than that.

Just because a majority of citizens don't want telemarketers, doesnt mean that a majority of congressmen will neccesarily want to put all those telemarketers out of work. Directly causing job loss is bad in politics. But, congress did approve the do not call list. It was a joke anyway with enough loopholes to make it worthless.

And it only takes one judge to declare any law unconstitutional...but you can appeal that up to the point where the majority of nine judges must agree.

A telemarketer could call you, even if your name is on the do not call list, if you had ordered anything from their company in the last 18 months or requested information in the past 6. Chances are, you have requested information, unknowingly, the last time you filled out any form in a store for anything.

Also, charities and some businesses were exempt from the do not call list.

When it came down to it, the actual reduction in telemarketing calls was something like 10%. It was just stupid.

I personally think the call list is bullshit to begin with. Reason:

It allowed for non-profit groups, political candidates and pollsters to call. That is bullshit!!

Just as I don't want people calling me to ask if I would like to change my phone service. I don't people asking me for money/my support come election time/what I think about whatever.

If my name is on a Do-Not-Call list. Then I don't want people fucking calling me!!!!

Caller ID is hardly foolproof. There are ways of making it so your phone number and/or name don't get displayed.

Well, I have to admit that I saw somerhing like this coming. OTOH, I have no landline, just a cell phone, so I can't really work up any sincere outrage about this, since it doesn't affect me.

ya know...

will be kinda ironic if the FTC gets lambasted, and the Do NOT Call List becomes a ' phone book for telemarketers ' ..

/snicker.

This is true, but then you just don't answer those calls. You can tell if someone's trying to *67 you as it will say "Private number".

I don't know about other phone company products, but here in Alabama we pay 1.99 a month for privacy director, which basically takes any "out of area" or "private number" and makes them leave their name. If they don't leave their name, the phone never rings, if they do (and some of the computers will stay on long enough for their automated message to kick in), the phone rings and you get an option to accept the call, refuse the call with a message that you do not accept solicitation calls or refuse the call saying you are currently unavailable.

It's a godsend, I'll tell you that, and worth every penny

Cao , thats sort of what i got, i have a answering service that intercepts all out of area calls and if they are not the preset people on the list the call is denied.

Those of you talking about Caller ID and answering machines don't work shift work do you?
Uh how hard is it to shut the ring off and lower the message volume. youll never be bothered with a phone ringing again and you can screen all your messages

Greell if you're in the US (I'm pretty sure this is a federal thing and not just state), it's illegal for people to solicite your cell phone because it costs you money/minutes for the call. So if you keep getting those I'd report the places that are calling you.
