Kinda reminds me of when Winston Churchill was corrected "You may not end a sentence with the word 'with' as it is a preposition". His reply was simply "Madam, your attittude is something with which I shall not put."

If it gets the message across, chill. If it is undecipherable, ignore it. Life goes on.

You left out the "up" in that quote (big surprise, I know).

If I remember right, the quote is "Madam, your impertinence is something up with which I shall not put."

Chuk - yep, it was the Hole, I think our entire raid (probably 20 characters played by 7 people) got
G-Flux'd up up onto the roof later that day, too.
I'm pretty sure that Burble's "Charge" (or maybe that one was a "FOLWWOOMEEEEEEEE111!!!!", I can't recall) leading us to a grisley but glorious death.
Those were good times, indeed!

I can understand if people make spelling errors, it happens. Even my keyboard locks up on me sometimes or the keys stick so I make an error. However the people who come here (for example) trying to defend themselves, talk nasty about another player/guild, or is an overall asshat, who constantly uses d00d sp33k and can't even spell 'wuz' (was) ... needs to be smacked with the 'lets learn to spell' toddler toys.

If you're trying to make a legitimate, coherent, rashional point .. or even if you're trying to flame someone, for the love of God spell to the best of your abilities! I can only GUESS at what some of these people are trying to say when I read posts that go something like this, "w3rd yo, i wuz in dredlandz tring to get a groop wen all of a suden this fuckface dr00d pulls a dog thing on me so im like runing and that fucker dr00d keps folowing me arond puling more mobs on me and im like wut the shit d00d .."

Always notice they can spell the vulgar words right, down to the T. Stay in school kids, there's a reason everyone says that.

I'm not so much a spelling nazi, but if somebody neglects their enter keys and makes one, annoyingly long solid block of text, I just skip over it and decide that if they couldn't take the time to hit enter and make it easier to read, then I shouldn't take the time to read their boring rabble anyways. ><

Spelling and other grammar doesn't really annoy me as much, just as long as commas are generally in the right place and people take the fucking time to spell "please", "thanks", "you", and "are"! Grr that annoys me ><

A lot of times I completly miss-spell things. It's not because I don't know how to type them, am a slow type or am to lazy to chang things, it's just, as a bard, I'm normally chant kiting. That means (In PoN) I have about 2 seconds to type my messege before I get hit and die. This gets really annoying when people keep sending me tells and wondering why I'm not responding .

Thank you for that unvarnished, unasked for, and completly correct correction.

They don't call me the master of the misquote for nothing after all.

Able to pull out three horribly mangled musical references in a single straight line! More puns than a Xanth novel! More misquotes than the Assoc. Press! Talks longer than the BBC! It's "OMG that monk thinks he's a bard. Quick, where's the SILENCE spells when you need them?"

You see, here we have an interesting situation. It would seem that about one half of the population of players in EverQuest (or at least the EMarr server) believe the exact opposite.

There are a frighteningly large number of players who believe that if you take the time to type a complete, legable sentence, you are a "n00b" as they would put it. I'm sure they would also inform you that they would "r0xx0r ur b0xx0rz", siting that they are indeed "l33t". I am also confident that if you spoke to one such player long enough they would inform you that they have a website where you can download thousands of hard to find, nearly-impossible to crack, "w@rez" (though apon visting said site you would find nothing but endless stream of pornographic pop-ups that would be certain to drive any seventh grade, sexually repressed child into a lust-filled clicking frenzy).

Sorry... got a little carried away there. My point is that not every won the third grade spelling bee. Not everyone has perfect grammer. As long as you make the effort to get your point across and at least try to make it all understandable, then congratulations to you for making more of an effort than most.

And, yes, obviously, I agree with Vespay. The pseudo-language: l33t sp3@k, certainly does not rock my boxers.

I'm in the paragraph camp. I'll quite happily read your mis-spells and other assorted typos, I make them often enough myself. What I WON'T do is read your 10,000 character, single paragraph, non-linear diatribe against your cousins, brothers, nephews, boyfriends trailer trash mother who just hacked your account.

If you want to rant, feel free. Just use paragraphs if you want me to read it. Not much to ask.

Regards,

CJ

I really don't care so much about spelling errors. In fact, people that don't use paragraphs don't get to me that much, unless it's ridiculously long. What bothers me are the people who are too lazy to type out whole words, substituting with things like 'plz' and 'thx'. It's really not that hard to type out a couple of extra letters, is it? I try not to be too anal about it, since I have friends who type like this, but when I am asked for something, I would rather be asked correctly. This may seem petty to some, but if I can learn to type out the whole word, so can you.

Oh, and something else that irks me: "Your the one who did it". WRONG! It's YOU'RE! YOU ARE the one who did it. I was really never that good at english, but I at least learned this. Your is a word that implicates possesion, such as "It's yours" or "We're going over to your house". Just ask yourself if it is saying "you are" or not. The guy at Burger King reading your application may just be impressed.

My return question for you "right-to-ignorance" folks is simple: Why is it that we cannot expect literacy from computer owners in modern countries with strong education systems? Literacy isn't that difficult and it makes communication MUCH easier. Asking for adult literacy doesn't seem like that much to ask to me. It in fact seems like a basic necessity in order to use computer-based message boards to communicate.

Just thought I'd chime in.

It seems my typing accuracy has been getting worse. For that reason I tend not to bash folks for their spelling or grammar. I think faster than I type so I often leave out whole words - thank goodness for the edit function.

I have a pet peeve though. Plz k thx! Abbreviating phrases I can deal with (atm, tba, afk) - those generally save time during tense situations. Dropping a couple letters from a word is just lazy.

And I have to echo the 'block paragraph' annoyance. The 'enter' key is your friend, use it and your audience will grow.

Easy rule of thumb:
Do not go to extreme lengths to call somebody an idiot if you can't at least lay it out in a manner that reflects your own intelligence.

I have a friend named Ronnie, who somehow managed to make it to age 52 without learning to read. This bothered him considerably, and he worked hard to hide it from everyone he knew.

One day he got up the nerve to ask me if I'd help him learn how to read. I happily agreed. Knowing that 50% of the motivation to master the written word comes from a healthy interest in the subject matter, I headed over to Ronnie's house, armed with a stack of Playboy, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and Oui magazines.

In under 6 hours he had picked up basic phonetic concepts and was reading quite confidently.
There's nothing like knowing the way to the heart of Miss August, or how Elle likes to spend her spare time, to instill a love a reading!

Sorry to burst your bubble Kiliara, but if you are refering to the USA, we do NOT have a strong education system. One of the weakest pre-college level learning environments in the free world actually. Also, as for the "computer owner" point... Since when did owning a computer raise the expaectation we should have of your intelect? As some one who has worked in computer/internet technical support I can tell you that the "average" computer user these days has, roughly, the mental capacity of a bowl of oatmeal.

Just my 2cp...

What I don't understand is all the people that say things along the lines of: Oh, I'm too good to sort through all that crap... I'm not going to try and interpret whatever that is you tried to type..blah blah. If it's really that hard to read; which I haven't come across alot of posts that are, then you need to learn how to read a bit better, IMO.

Then again..some posts are just painful..but others, people notice a few typos and immediately they throw the grammar/spelling card and claim they're not going to sift through the garbage, when it's actually quite readable. Laziness rears it's ugly face not only for the poster, but for the reader as well.
