Default Old School

We've all seen on various post's, people referring to themselve's as 'Old School' EQ players. With EQ being around for over 5 years now, and EQ2 now in the playground I'm curious as to what will become the deffinition of 'Old School'......................

Needed a new thread IMO anyhoo =)

Spring and summer '99 starters will forever be the truely Old School non-beta players.

Anyone else is just a newbie.

<--november 2001, mid-school representing. yo. I remember when EQ came out in 99 and thinking, what the crap, I'd never pay a per month subscription to play a game!!! 2 years later I was paying and haven't stopped. Wished I would have started playing in 99 so when my friends recruited me in '01 I didn't have to play catch-up for the first year. (Kind of like how they'll recruit me for EQ2 in '06 . . . I can just see it now.)

Old school if...

You were fighting over spawns at the spires in South Karana.
You were one of the 100 people in South Karana.
You were one of the 50 people at any given time in SolB.
You were camping the BIBS and blackened iron armor in Runnyeye.
You were training the zone in Unrest, Blackburrow, Crushbone, etc.
You were level 46-50 (with nobody over level 50) and were fighting in Hate or Fear. People in their 60s still have trouble there.
You know what the Paw of Opalla is because you either camped it or paid lots of PP for it.
FBR was the Flowing Black Robe, not the Froglock Bonecaster Robe.
You were around when there were no epics.
You were fighting over camps in Oasis, No Ro, East/West Commons...
You had to ride the boat because there wasn't enough druids to port yet...and they cost way too much anyway.
You had no idea what a rez was because there wasn't one until like level 40...and who the hell was that high?!?!
You had to meet someone at the Freeport bank to finish a transaction for bronze armor.
Crafted was the armor for warriors until planar.
(Old) Planar was an upgrade over (just about) anything droppable.

There's a lot more, but I'll leave that to others.

You've read dozens of "old school posts" on message boards.
Your friends helped you buy a Combine magic weapon from the gypsies in North Karana so you could hit those damn wisps.
You not only did the Paw of Opolla and Testament of Vanear quests, you did the Paw before the attempt to make Kerra Isle worth visiting for any reason whatsoever. Or, you were ever slaughtered as a lowbie by Gynok the mid 20 something mummy appearing at the zone in when you were half his level.
Getting rabies was actually a very bad thing that you hated if you weren't grouped with a healer who could cure it.
You were happy to finally get a full set of patchwork armor.
You scrimped to buy that first backpack.

...and about 10 thousand other things!

ROFL. I remember the first time I was offered a rez. I had died in Steamfont Mountains to a skelly when I was trying to zone into LFay. There was someone else there but I was too busy trying to make the zone..and failed.

Running back from Kaladim where my original newbie bind point was, I got a tell asking if I wanted a rez.

My response: Not right now, I'm running back to my body since I died.

Hmmmm... May 7th, 1999. Thats oldskool. I had a barbarian warrior with a guise of the deciever. I remember before weapons became lore I ran around with 2 PGT's (polished granite tomohawks). Mino Axes, Rubicite, Bone Bladed Claymore, Journeyman boots as a dropped item, I remember being one of the very first barbarians to make it to faydwer. Playing all night the day of release then running for 8 hours with 2 other lvl 9's, getting lost in runnyeye and just about everywhere else til finally making it to Kelethin. 8 hours!!! no maps were around yet!

Shit that was a long long time ago.

I used to play banker in Rathe Mountains with Keldarn. Ah the good old days...hmm, come to think of it, 10 years from now these will be "good old days" too.

/ooc Orc2 is camped!
Fine steel was an upgrade.
Banded sold for 1pp/ac
Bronze for 2pp/ac
You had to do newbie buffs for donations to afford your level 8 spells.
And your level 12 spells.
You drooled at a 6/36 ratio.
Ghoulbane was worth doing.

Quick break down (someone fix these if I make a mistake, its been awhile) and no I am not going to explain what the letter abreviations stand for, if you of that era you will know.

If you remember when the BABS was added into the game you might be old school.

If you started when the lvl cap was lvl 60 your NOT old school.

If you made a big race and waited around Gfay for 30 mins+ for a high level druid to come and give you wolf form so you could finally bank only to then be killed by the banker and get your corpse stuck in the bank you might be old school.

If you saw a dragon during the first 3 months you start your NOT old school.

If the PoD was unkillable by anyone solo for the first year you played you might be old school.

If your first character was an Iksar your NOT old school.

If you remember a time when necro and mage pets were on the same level you might be old school.

If you never knew PoSky as anything but PoSky your NOT old school.

If you remember when the guides lived up in PoAir you might be old school.

If you always wondered why you have a sense heading button since you've got that nice compass your NOT old school.

If you remember having to sit and click the sense heading button for hours to raise your skill you might be old school.

If you don't know the website eqatlas.com your NOT old school.

If you remember when it took more then 15 minutes to level to lvl 10 you might be old school.

Bleh, sense heading.. at least it gave you something to do on the boats other then try like hell to keep from falling off.

I still have a huge binder with all those damn EQatlas maps LOL. I would get sooo frustrated when they didn't have the map I was looking for.

LOL remember the waiting list at the treants? You could always tell who hunted treants because they couldn't use druid ports without invis hahaha.

Hah so do I. Has a list of "Sanaddar's dream equipment on the front". 200 int, 180 charisma, 1038 hp...you know, the best you could hope for pre-kunark.

If you remember forking out 80pp for a Gossamer Robe or 250pp for a FBR you might be old school.

If you remember the screaming mace quest, you might be old school.

If you've ever grouped at the chessboard in BB you might be old school.

If you remember seeing someone run past wearing a SMR with the guild tag "Da`kor", "Midnight Sojourn", or "Storm's Fury" you might be old school.

If you remember climbing on the walls of high hold pass soloing guards since they were unable to target you, you might be old school...and probably a cheater too.

If you remember having to sit and click the sense heading button for hours to raise your skill you might be old school.
While camping the A Wharf Rat in Kerra Isle: Sense Heading, Beg from pet, Fish, Sense Heading, Beg from pet, Fish, etc while I wait for respawns.

July, 1999. Getting pounded into the sand by a sand giant in North Ro at Derv 2 or Derv 3. Zoning into Oasis of Marr, seeing 2 Sand Giants and peeing my pants! Oh my gosh, High Hold Pass was PACKED with people. I think I might be "old school"!

So it seems that pre-Kunark days will always be "Old School'...count me in then Not as long as some, but still put alot of time in. Probably why I burnt out. But if it wasnt for new folk getting hooked, then maybe alot of old-timers wouldnt still be around to say they they were "Old School"

Just a few I can think of...

If the Robe of the Oracle was the best of the best of the best. Anyone you saw with gold stars for nipples was uber.

If you've ever been in LGuk when there was more then 75 people there and when a SSoY dropped the winner got a tell of congratulations from everyone in the zone.

When a SSoY was it...nothing better in the entire game. SSoY was tradeable only.

If you even remember when Da`Kor, Midnight Sojourn, Storm's Fury, and/or United Independent were actual guild tags.

If you played for a year and your character wasn't level 50. Yay for playing 1 1/2 years on my enchanter and him still being level 39.

If you even know what a Langseaxe was...the shit back then for warriors.

If you remember when starting stats mattered since there weren't items to raise them easily available. Who else started a small race warrior and had to change his race when he was level 20ish (2 months -ish into playing the character at least) because you were sick of being encumbered.

Ever been fooled by the following:
Binekar shouts, "
Cazic Thule has hit YOU for 1000 points of damage!"

First time I saw that in LGuk I nearly peed on myself.

Not so old school things that I remember from quite a while back:

Seeing a Bard from Storm's Fury fully decked out in Singing Steel...I thought I had just seen the next best thing to God

Cougar Claw Earrings were going for 1k+ due to the good ac for an earring

Hmmm...all I got for now.

I'm not old-school but concider myself middle-aged

Not sure if many will remember this particular guy ... but he was the first GM I had ever seen. Needless to say, I was in awe (as was my friend, Demerin).

http://us.f2.yahoofs.com/users/417a6...QAbuBB9kPzRQy_

It wasn't until much later that we found out that he was part of quite a big event ... which made us feel even more so chuffed at the fact that he gave us 20pp ..each!
