The only downside to this may be that given the varying IP addresses, this may be one person with a botnet of trojan infected computers, similar to the DoS scares of yesteryear... where one person spreads his virus/trojan a little bit and slowly builds 50+ computers he can control, enabling him access to those machines, then using those machines to post these links... Those machines are unknowning victums of infection. Banning them works, but finding the IP address could be better, as maybe it might lead to someone finding a "zombie computer" or computer infected with the bug, and being able to find the true attacker's IP address.
Or it could just be one group with a few computers that keep making the entries. /shrugs... heard about it back when the DoS attacks were more prevalent.

Actually, what would help is to have a board registration process where it can't be done by a bot. Much like those sites you go to where you have to actually enter a confirmation code that is imbedded in a graphic.

Hell of an idea Davek, unfortunately Oggie is the only person that can accomplish that.

And there are now some OCR bots that can read the message in the graphic - the newest and best way of beating this is having a random question that needs a correct answer to complete the registration. Several boards now have this feature that the mods (or sys op's) enter in the questions and answers and the system will NOT complete a registration that cannot answer the question correctly.

E-mail and graphic recognition don't keep the spammers away from another vB board I admin. Good luck with that one.

Something I have found effective is to blacklist email domains.
90% of the spam that PE has gotten was from domains with .ru So just don't allow registration with email address from .ru I know this sucks for people with russian IPs, but they just have to get an email address with a more reputable source. The way I handle spam is: Enforce email activation ( I think you do this already ) Use some type CAPTCHA ( the image text you have to type in ) Then if a spammer gets through this, and you notice their post is spam, lookup their email, if it is not from a reputable source, blacklist the entire email domain from future registration, and delete the user. I know that is not a perfect solution, but I have never met anyone that actual has an email address that ends in .ru, or .biz, etc.. It cut our spam down a good bit, and then I usually go through and purge/ban email domains about once a week. But just block .ru and .biz will stop a good bit of your spam, also domains like cashette.com are big spammers, so just block any emails that try to come from cashette.com Our system is based on PHPBB, but vBulliten should have extension that do what I described. |

For necedemalice.com I use phpBB2 and the Textual Confirmation mod. It asks you a question in the registration form that if you answer incorrectly it doesnt complete the registration. I have negated 2 link bots a day and no longer have a problem. I could even allow people to post even without confirmaing their email address if i wanted to, but I don't.
I know this is vBulletin and not phpBB but maybe there is somehting similar for vBulletin and easy to impliment. |
