Velious. I wish I'd started earlier to fully appreciate and experience that one really- by the time I was raiding seriously Velious raids were supplemental to Luclin end-game. I dig wintery environments (<3 WotLK in WoW for similar reasons). Add in creepy pallen dwarves, giants and dragons...pure win.
2nd place would have to be PoP for me just because it was the last truly competitive era in EQ's history. Even when we lost the race I loved the rush. EQ got soft with instancing. I still had fun after PoP certainly, but it was never the same. PoP also had the advantage of killing so many gods- who doesn't love video-game deicide? Being retired for nearly two years now I can't speak to the latest few.

Still playing, started just prior to Velious. Velious is still my favorite.

Velious was my favorite for years as well, probably still is... but for me personally, TSS is a close second.

I started EQ in July 1999 and created my first character, Inmountains, on EM in September 1999. Planes of Power was the best expansion, but I have not seen the last 2 or 3. It was a fun run!

Velious... nothing beats a dungeon full of DRAGONS! Come on, and the race to wake the sleeper? I agree that instancing partially killed it for me, I liked the race to get into the dungeons after a restart or the working out of a schedule to kill things. Naggy & Vox pickup raids, where you never knew if it was going to be a TPK or a victory.
I can remember back when others could loot your corpse, you were a lot more cautious back then. Never knowing if you could trust that monk to drag your corpse out of Mistmoore castle (a assured re-death mission) was always fun. Ah the good old days.

I doubt many liked it as much as I did, but Depths of Darkhollow just had the right atmosphere for me. It kind of brought back the mystical feel. The music didn't sound like some orchestrated attempt to make an epic ballad or operatic crescendo (at least in the zones that stuck in my mind), but just kept a trippy parallel to the visuals. It was the last expansion I got to play, but I was still enjoying the game when I quit.

Velious, forever and always best expansion. We xp'd like hell to get our characters into Velious on the day it was released.
And I'm with Horm - snowy ice fields and dragons, and the race for the Sleeper. It was... electric, baby, electric. |
