Default Hardware problem, need suggestion/answers please.

Sorry, I'm not the best at hardware, so I'd
appreciate any bit of help you guys can give .

Last night, I started up my computer to play Everquest, but as I was
on the loading screen before the character select screen, I noticed a
lot of pixlelated areas around the EverQuest picture. I also noticed the
files were taking a lot longer to load than usual. Once the loading was
done, it sort of froze per se. I could see the character buttons, but
there was a no graphics behind it whatsoever showing the character.
I ctrl+alt+del'd out and tried starting Warcraft III. It would not start
either, showing a blank screen, but I could hear music in the background.

At this point, I thought my video card driver files may have been
corrupted, so I redownloaded those. However, that did not help.

Next, I redowloaded the DirectX 9 files online, and then I ran dxdiag.
I checked the DirectX files list, and it said no problems found. I then
ran the DirectDraw and Direct3D tests. There was a slight delay in one
of the Direct3D tests, but both completed themselves.

Aside from not being able to start games/programs which obviously rely
on lots of graphics, I am not having any problems. I can surf the Internet,
and watch movies on Windows Media Player.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I'm
already starting to suffer from EQ withdrawl.

Have done a full scan of your hard drive (to rule out virii and bad sectors, etc)?

Well being that you have an nvidia based card I would recommend going older then the current drivers released. These were extremly buggy.

Do you notice any problems with normal windows operations, non gaming... If so then try defragging your PC and also scanning for viri.

If not, there is 2 main possible problems, either your memory is starting to crap out or your videocard is. Open your case up and check to see if your card is still properly installed, check the ram heat sinks and fan on it, make sure they are still attached well, this could be a problem with over heating.

If all else fails, try removing your videocard and installing another, and try gaming... if everything runs fine its the card, if not then something is up software wise...

Just ran Norton Anti-Virus, all 51,100 files on my computer are clean.

I don't have any issues with normal Windows operations. I can open
and use Internet Explorer, Word, Paint, Media Player (movies), etc.
without any issues. The computer freezes only when I try to load
high graphics programs (EQ, Warcraft III).

I also just took apart my computer and took out the video card and
RAM chips, and reinserted them after cleaning off the nearby dust.
Still no dice though.

I try a thing or two more, but if that doesnt work I'll most
likely be video card shopping in the next day or so.

(edit: Just did another test on dxdiag; it failed on the last 2 Direct3D acceleration tests)

Try swaping out the VC, for all you know it could be your Motherboards AGP port...

Turns out it was the video card after all. I went out
and bought an ATI Raedon 9600 SE 128mb card and
installed it, and everything runs fine again.

On a side note, I seem to be having an issue now ingame
with my arrow keys acting like Shift is being held in even
though it's not, but I just rebound the movement keys to
my num-pad. Guess my keyboard's crapping out now too

Pretty sure that's an in-game problem, and not something with your keyboard. I've had the exact same thing happen on two different PCs of mine. Usually just hitting either of the shift keys again "unlocks" it, but sometimes a /camp is required.

And I've always had my movement bound to the numpad. More surface area to spread the fingers out on...more comfortable.

Yeah it's a new feature or bug depending on if you like it or not...I loathe it and hope they fix it. Seems more of a bug since it only happens some of the time.

So good news...you don't need a new KB....bad news we need the devs to get their heads out of their asses.
