Default free productivity software?

I'm getting a new gaming rig, so my current gaming computer will then become my work/surfing PC.

It'll still be running Win XP Pro SP3 but I want to get away from some of the clunkier software I've been using...namely Office 2003 and McAffee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i(free from work).

I'm leaning towards AVG for virus protection.

Any good free replacements for Word/Excel/Outlook?

For an e-mail client I don't really need anything too fancy but can hopefully import my Outlook 2003 pst or something(and it's huge...I really should clean it out before converting). Pegasus, Eudora and Thunderbird are the names I'm familiar with.

I do really like the Contacts and Calendar feature of Outlook though.

As for word processing, I can generally get by for 99.999% with just notepad/write but there are times I'd need MS Word Compatability for reading/saving. Same deal on Excel...basic functionality with Excel compatability for reading/saving.

Any suggestions? Anyone tried OpenOffice?

The mail app in OpenOffice is if I recall, a sweet thing with lots of features. Setting up the account was tricky (for me) but I say this as someone who has only had to set their mail app up twice or thrice over a decade. I've been lucky with email apps

My 320Gb sata2 grew a defect and I haven't got around to re-installing Linux (OpenOffice runs in Linux as well). I did replace the drive with a 1-Tb sata2 job which in fact cost me half as much as the smaller one. The 320Fb thing is/was still under warranty and I haven't got off my ass.

Good Luck, I can never remember the details for backing up .pst and the secure p/w info etc. Its so infrequent that I have to use them.

I just settled on using OpenOffice for the office apps and Outlook 2003 for mail since I'm so used to it.

I might switch it up when I eventually upgrade that PC.
