No worries - I've embraced my inner nerd.

In a way, looking back over the past 30 years, it's really been a "nerd world" - you've got Bill Gates as a long-term "richest man on the planet" (and with his foundation, arguably one single man with more power than probably half the world's countries) and Steve Jobs (a nerd with incredible taste in design) as "CEO of the decade". Just as an idle question, I wonder if either of them really follow sports - I'd be willing to believe either way.

Weird... the counter is moving again. Must have been something to do with the cache of my browser.

As European (Dutch) I am of course somewhat of a football fan but the football at the World Cup has been horrible so far. On the plus side, it can only get better in the 2nd round.

I haven't really been following it...I just keep seeing headlines about "dramatic ties"...has anyone actually won a game yet?

I'd imagine anyone watching frequently would have nightmares about swarms of killer bees - whenever I walk through the break room at work (they've got 3 TVs tuned to it), the stereophonic "Bzzzzz" creeps me out.

There have been some wins, but lots of draws. I think there's only been 4 games so far in which one team has scored more than once. I imagine a true soccer fan could appreciate it more than a casual one like me, but it has been fairly dull IMO.

It wont get good until the knock out stage. Every one is playing it safe to avoid the emberassment of losing on points.

Spain paid today the same way they did last year when they lost to the USA. They werent aggressive at all until half way thru the second half and the Swiss played defense like they had a lead. It was the 2nd most entertaining match so far after the Brazil vs North Korean match. North Korea is much better than its rank.

Yeah, NK surprised me yesterday. Much better than I was expecting from them. Then again, they're probably loving their 1 month hall pass from the gulag that is the PRK. In that respect I almost feel like rooting for them, just hard to do so while they're representing that country.

I went to a narcolepsy support group, and a soccer game broke out!

The reason Soccer will never catch on in the US is the crying. Every time a guy gets within 5 feet of another guy, he falls to the ground and screams like he found 3 ticks on his scrotum.

Throwing a guy out for this match and the next match for nicking another player on the foot in the goal area is just not good entertainment.

Yeah, the red card on S.Africa's goalie was ludicrous today.

Shard, are you referring to that offsides call in the US/Slovenia match?

Actually the 3000 yellow cards handed out in the first match. I still dont know what the call was on that disallowed goal by the US at the end of the game.

Well, 90% of Malians are Muslim, and the ref was from Mali... and we all know most Muslims around the globe hate the USA. That said, it was an impartial call

Thanks to England it won't be that difficult for the US to reach the 1/8 finals.

I read the call was offsides, which is a good rule to call, since no one truly understands what the rule means other than, something of a punishment for running too fast.

A score of 1-1 is boring. Football games where the score is 3-0 are also boring. Something needs to happen eventually, otherwise its a game of very slow tennis on a very big court played with feet.

Hockey would be just as bad, accept they fill the time in between scoring with a few boxing matches and occasionally beating each other with sticks. It's like Lacross for men.

I dont mind the low scores as much as i mind the turtling. England played a boring game yesterday against Algeria, but Algeria was entertaining to watch because of the pressure they put on the ball. Those dudes were chasing down every ball no matter where it was on the field.

It's like they're not even watching the game. They don't even cheer when someone scores or makes a save. It's just same droning, buzzing the entire game.
