Default Professional ethics question

This is particularly aimed at anyone who works in academic research. I work in a neuroscience lab as a research technician and recently my supervisor hinted at the strong likelihood that I will be named as one of the authors on a paper the lab is producing, for the work Ive put in over the past year or so.

Great news you might think. Not entirely. See the thing is I absofuckinglutely hate my job and am leaving it at the end of July to take a month off before I start business school. My boss of course doesnt know this yet as only a fool in my position would give that much notice.

So my question to you all is should I humbly decline authorship? Getting published gives me zero benefit. Im not looking to continue on in research in any capacity really, so this would be a trophy as irrelevant as my Little League All Star trophies that reside in my childhood bedroom. However, I did put the work in, so its not as if I didnt earn it. I guess I suck at leaving jobs and dont want to feel any more guilty about splitting after only a year.

Thoughts?

You did the work, take the authorship. Your career change plans have nothing to do with the work you already put in.

Take it. As for being worthless? It's something more to throw on a resume which you might be able to reference in an interview or something.

Accept the credit for what you've done. Anyone else's name being put on your work could be considered fraudulent.

I think you should take authorship for two reasons: 1) As everyone else here has stated, you did put in the work necessary to publish it so why not and 2) You never know how long you will stay at your job. You say you want to leave in July, but in all possibility, you might for reasons unknown to you now consider staying and taking credit for what is rightfully yours might assist you in future endeavors from within the company. If you think you are leaving in July, you wouldn't slack off on your work, would you? I doubt that you would, so why decline an article for which you deserve every bit of credit? I'm not being combative, I'm trying to create questions for you that will help in your decision. Hope it works out for you.

I am in a different time zone to my guild, so I can never raid with them in PoTime. Therefore why do I bother hailing the projections from Ele gods to get time flagged?

Be the best you can be at whatever you are doing, live for the moment as the future can change on a moments notice. Live every day as though it may be your last :P

Hormadrune...

You did the work, take the authorship. As has been mentioned, your plans may be de-railed or post-poned. By then it will be too late.

At the very least it is a credible resume bullet.

Good job, Bro.

I'll be flipping burgers before doing another year in the lab

However, you guys made sense. While my plans for the coming year is definite, there's really no good reason to decline it. She may decide not to bother after I give notice at the end of the month, but that's her decision, not mine.

Thanks all for the feedback.

Hormadrone,
I honestly believe you should continue your academic research.
Certainly there is a future in such a fantastic science.

I found an incredible site that discusses 'in depth, the ideals and philosophical
concepts too learning more about how the human body functions
with disorders. And how the nervous system can eventually
break down after years, or even months from certain diseases
that have yet to be cured.

The papers written and shown on this site have been renowned throughout
the world. Many scientists often refer each other to these papers
for reference in their own research of neurological science.

It's a bold new world we live in. The Technology we are advancing on
is simply incredible. Imagine how advanced we will be in only 20 more years.

Here's the link. They go into depth about how the field is advancing,
and how far we have advanced since the 15th century.

Hormadrune,
You should ponder, "with serious consideration" this site for research in your next
Academic Research Authoriship.

Shall we call you Biff?
