Angry DVD - no audio

My god, I hate this shit. I hated dealing with this shit when I worked for Dell; likewise when it happens to me.

In a nutshell, I'm not getting any audio from any DVD on my computer. Doesn't matter what player, whether it's Win2K's dvdplay or WinDVD, or what movie. I can play mp3's, wavefiles, MIDI's, CD audio all without a problem. I've reset my card (SB Live!) back to default; removed the driver for it, reinstalled it, etc, etc. No go. Still no goddamned audio. Used both Windows' own driver and the one Creative has; same story.

Messed with the different sound settings, i.e S/PDIF, digital in/out, whatever, still no sound. Volume levels are up.

Doesn't matter whether I set the movie's output to 5.1 Dolby, straight stereo, surround or whatever; still no go.

Video playback is flawless, go figure

Any help is appreciated.

Of course, you have the audio cable going from the DVD player to the sound card? The correct slot on the sound card?

I can play mp3's, wavefiles, MIDI's, CD audio all without a problem.
NM...I missed that part about CD Audio...

I'm not quite sure about how DVD player hardware is installed, but I remember in my PC Troubleshooting class that there was this thing that you connected from your CD player to your sound card (I think) for CD audio. I didn't quite understand the concept, myself, but I wonder if the same thing goes with DVD players?

Ah hah. That's a different story then!!

I don't have a DVD player driver in my computer just yet. Not until they start making games on DVDs instead of CDs for computers rather than consoles.

Windows 2K and above can read CD digital audio data through the IDE ribbon, no extra audio cable required. Most new computers that ship with windows XP don't even have the cables installed. (Since about Mid-2001)

DVD audio due to it's encoding may be an entirely different story.

No, it has a CD audio cable. I installed Directx 9.0b a couple of weeks ago; pounds to peanuts it's that that has sent the DVD audio south. I installed the Divx codec as well before I went to work tonight.

I'll give it a try again when I get home.

I'd bet on DirectX too. Try uninstalling it, then re-updating your sound card drivers, then re-installing DX9.0b

I have a similar issue. I have a DVD on both my and my wife's PC...qnd on both, the sound is very low. When I turn the sound all the way up, you almost have to sit in front of the PC to listen. I've tried everything I could think of...
