Default The Passion of Christ

I can't decide whether this movie was boringly offensive or offensively boring.

It really should have been called: "Jesus Falls Down a Bunch."

Seriously I stopped counting how many times he went sprawling on the ground after about 30.

Mel Gibson just isn't a good enough director to make a powerful movie out of even the most obvious subject matter in the universe.

The movie had Monica Belluci in it and she wasn't even sexy. What a crime.

At any rate I felt kinda bad for that Jesus dude getting all banged up like that but seriously, what was the point behind this movie?

It didn't move me. It didn't prompt me to rethink any of my prior perceptions of christianity. It wasn't even controversial IMO. Any idiot can see that it wasn't intended to disparage Jews. It was just graphic violence and Jesus falling on his holy ass. If you are into that sort of thing I guess it might be your movie. I think the best description for this movie would be "Jesus porn."

I can foresee this movie being the end of Mel's career.

Save your $ and go rent Last Temptation of Christ. At least that movie has David Bowie in it.

I'm still going to see it, but I'm hoping to do so after the church groups get their fill. Was watching the news last night and they did a piece on the movie showing people walking out of the theater crying their souls out as if they had just witnessed the actual crucifixion. If I was walking out of the theater and saw that I definitely wouldn't be able to hold back some wiseass comment and then you'd read in the next day's paper "Smartass gets lynched by Christian group."

Jesus was a carpenter previously to his career as a prophet.

Which was illustrated in the movie...and watching the "messiah" building kitchen furniture was probably the most exciting part of the whole thing.

Jesus should have his own home improvement show I guess.

I dont think Mel is worried about his career at all. I am sure if you asked him he would say making this movie was the purpose of his career.

I have not yet seen the movie but isnt it like Titanic? You know the story before it happens.... so how could the story all by itself be that moving? The reality of seeing what happened is suppose to be what moves you but it isnt gonna move everyone. It is all a personal thing, if you are moved then cool, if not then big deal. It is still just a movie.

Wow,

Being stuck in Korea, I don't even hear about all the new movies coming out. I guess when I finally get back Stateside I will have a lot of renting to do.

Being Agnostic, I doubt I will see this one, unless it involves me getting laid!

I sort of knew how Titanic was going to end. I only sat through the entire thing to make sure they killed Leo. I remember sitting next to my girlfriend at the time, listening to her sob a bit and thinking "Hey, shit doesnt always float I guess"

Anyways, I will see the movie at a dollar theatre with all the other hard core cheapskates. No way am I paying full price for a movie with no car chases, hobbits, or pirates.

It needs an article because "Christ" is a title. Here is a definition:

DEFINITION: CHRIST
Greek name that means "anointed" (the word is Messiah in Hebrew). Jesus was Christ, the Anointed One who accomplished perfectly the mission of priest, prophet and kingthe savior foretold in the Old Testament.

Well that works for me. I always thought he was refered to as Christ, rather than The Christ. Learn something new everyday.

God damn, Misty, could you for once in your worthless life type something like a normal fucking human being? You think you're coming across as erudite and well-read using the words that you do but let me give you a tip: YOU'RE COMING ACROSS AS A FUCKING IDIOT.

Phrases like "Mel didn't flunk film-making and the storyline is grist for the mill" and "the drama isn't just religious sop" totally detract from any point which you are trying to make by distracting the reader with your pomposity.. in addition to that, they make some people want to stab out their own eyeballs because it would be less painful than reading any more of what you post. Please do us all a favor and consider changing your writing style. I'm pretty sure there would be prayers of thanksgiving were you to suddenly start posting like a 6th grader.

[Edit: Btw, I realize that this is one of the most legible posts that Misty has ever put up, and the writing style STILL made me totally lose track of the post topic. Maybe that's just because it called to mind all the other stupid shit he's posted.]

I just read your post Misty...I must have missed it the first read through. Here are my thoughts regarding your post form what I know or was taught.

---------------------------------
...before he came afoul of the Rabbinical/Pharisee/Scribe bureaucracy.

>> I think the main thing that turned the Pharisees against Him was when he went into the temple courtyard and overturned the tables and drove the thieves out. Here is why he did that...

>>Back when there were animal sacrifices, a family was required to bring a spotless lamb or a dove (if you could not afford a lamb). Of course there were religious folks at the temple that inspected your offering, and if they determined it was not adequate...they would sell you an offering that was "good enough." Of course it was at a premium. That is why Jesus called them thieves.

He is said (in the bible) to be descended from the house of David, there's a claim to the blood of the Kings of Israel in his family tree however distant.

>>Both Mary and Joseph were descendants of David.

Perhaps the significance of his actual birth was scorned by establishment, he was born in a stable.

>>Of course who would ever think of a king being born in a lowly manger in a barn.

Maybe Judas just wanted a martyr, but his secret plot backfired in a twisted way inside the Temple over something incorporating the Divine Right of Kings and scripture in its arguement. Certainly Christ was set up but Judas isn't the only dude with motives. That's the gist of it.

>>Some suggest that Judas was expecting Jesus to set up His kingdom now...and did what he did to hurry things along. Others suggest that Judas was upset that Jesus wasn't going to do what he expected, and did what he did out of spite. Others say he did it for the money...he did pilfer the funds, and was in charge of the money box.

For any of you that like historical facts, and want to read any of the Bible...read Luke, and Acts (acts of the apostles). Luke wrote both of these books. He was a physician and a historian. He makes sure to point out some interesting stuff...especially in the book of Acts. Archaeologists in that area have the Bible as one of their reference books...and Luke is popular among them.

I saw the movie and I'd say he fell down about 10 times.

Thanks Martigan.

Mel I think is Catholic, I'd say the protagonist fell precisely 14 times as taught in the Stations of the Cross (I think 14) representing every time The Christ fell. It's hardly realistic to suppose a human being beaten close to death and who is likely dying is going to be rock steady with a whopping Cross on their back. You can take it for granted he was a very big man.
