Default Hard Drive Problem

I have a computer that has two hard drives in it. I formated the hard drive that had Windows XP Pro on it to clean it off. I reinstalled windows on the first hard drive and this is where the trouble began.

After getting windows installed and running, I went to check to see if the computer sees the second hard drive (which has about 20 something gigs of data on it). Windows sees the drive, but will not access it because it says that the drive is not formated. The drive is formated and it works just fine.

I dont want to lose all the data on that drive. Does anyone have any idea on what I can do to fix this?

Augh. I think I read something on that when I was researching my other problem. I'll see what I can dig up.

Quick questions:

Have you fully patched the new WinXP installation? Not having some of the fixes in those patches can prevent you from seeing a drive properly that did have them applied from a previous installation.

Did you do any changes hardware wise or was it strictly a format/reinstall on the primary hard drive?

Here's the KB article for what I was thinking of when asking about your patching the OS.

quick question...before you wiped and installed, did the first hard drive, or your system before the re-install, have Norton or Roxio GoBack on it?

I meant specifically a program called GoBack....it was recently released by Roxio, then Symantec bought it up.

GoBack is a restore system for your computer. It works much like Windows XP's system restore does. HOWEVER, it encrypts the content of the hard drive, thus dis-allowing the data to be seen on the hard drive unless it is the ONLY bootable drive.

That's why I was curious.

Vidden,

Just curious as to the status of your problem. Get things worked out?

It may also be something as simple as having lost the master boot record for whatever reason. I forget the console command to recover it... I think it's 'fixmbr X:' where X is the drive in question.

Hey, I ended up just saying fuck it and formatted the second hard drive. I ended up losing all of the data on it, but as you can see, I lived lol.

I tried to call MS to see if it was a Windows issue, but they kept saying it was a Maxtor problem. I called Maxtor, they said it was a Windows problem.

Oh well. Thanks for asking
