Default Woman Gives Birth to her own Grandchildren

http://www.cnn.com/2004/HEALTH/12/29....ap/index.html

I'm glad that the babies were born healthy, but I am confused about something. Wouldn't this be a risk to the genetic line up? I understand in-vitro, and then the embryo is implanted into the womb of a surrogate mother. But don't the children get the DNA in the blood from the surrogate as well? Is there even a chance for it? I just never understood that aspect of things.

The DNA (blueprints) comes from the egg and sperm alone.

I had to re-read the article after thinking about your concern. I think the only way there could have been a DNA issue was if it was the mother of the triplets father that gave birth. This was not the case though.

Oakenbier is right in that the actual DNA makeup is from sperm and egg, but a significant portion of development is driven by maternal RNA. I would assume thereby that much of early protein transcription and associated processes also are maternally driven. Honestly I'm not sure what, if any, problems that would cause, but it could be akin to issues concerning recessive detrimental genetics that can be a problem in children born of incest. I only took 1 or 2 development courses though, so I could be off.

The sperm was not originally related to the egg holders. Either one of them so I am wondering how it would even be a concern.

You're probably right in that (regarding the concern only really being for the case of paternal grandmother acting as surrogate).

Grandparents usually end up raising the kids anyway becuase the real parents are too busy being selfish that the gramma might as well give birth to them too.

Ok, now I understand that there shouldn't be any genetic problems. It was just a bit confusing is all. I didn't know if the DNA from the egg would have any adverse effects either. Now it seems clear that it doesn't. I figured that the sperm (DNA from it) being unrelated was safe, so to speak, but I was more concerned with the maternal genes. Still, it's a wonderful blessing that three babies were conceived and born healthy!

Shame on you Horm, you brought flashbacks of my Genetics 101 course I took back in 1980. I used to dream A, G, C, and T formed in a double helix, Punnett Square's, Mendelson's Theories, OWWW, my head hurts now!

Mitochondrial DNA is always passed from the mother anyway.

Which, while an interesting fact, is entirely unrelated to the matter at hand. You just wanted to show off what little knowledge of genetics you have, I'm sure.

There aren't any genetic issues; nothing even remotely like inbreeding. It's weird but not an issue.

The baby could have been born in an incubator (if they were sohpisticated enough) and come out fine. The environment in the womb certainly does have effects on development but it doesn't affect genetic makeup.
