Default Farewell

To put it simply, I'm done here in the ol' SV. What little humor I manage to dig out of this forum is far outweighed by the crushing bitterness and cynicism fostered by the stupidity so rampant throughout the rest. Gone are the days of real debate, where we could have a thread on evolution or economics or what-have-you. Now it's just the same bickering about the same topics by the same posters who love the sound of their own fingers on a keyboard, derailed by the same forum clowns with nothing better to do.

I can do better things than this.

The world is going to hell in a handbasket, and it's a direct result of the way we vote. I'm not talking about the utterly pointless tripe which our national elections have become, but our local governments which are running our country, bit-by-bit, into the ground. We're watching the brightly-lit stage while the real players all stalk around the dark ampitheater and off us one by one. In a manner of speaking; I'm a writer, I use metaphors. It's what I do.

I plan to spend more time devoting my talents to the progress of democracy. Not in some godforsaken dustbowl of a nation around the globe where it stands almost no chance of holding up, but right here where it's most directly under threat by career politicians with no interest in actually governing, but simply getting re-elected. I respect, or more accurately sympathize with, soldiers for doing what they do. They have to get shot at. I only have to put up with hate-mail.

Instead of just bitching about it where nobody cares, I'll make a stand. Getting involved in politics is stupidly easy, as I've recently discovered. I can only surmise that the reason more people don't do it is sheer laziness combined with apathy.

If this all sounds like a scatching indictment of this message board (and political forums in general) it is. We channel our motivation into easy, consequence-free activities rather than taking action. We waste our time arguing instead of actually thinking about issues. For a long while they've been nothing more than a way for me to see the extremes of opinion which crop up around the slightest of issues. They're a good barometer of a tiny proportion of the population, the one which seems to do the least voting.

That's not to say there aren't a few keen minds here. Brigiid and Beal are always a pleasant challenge to debate. Heretic's got his heart in the right place if he'd just do something about it. I can always borrow a few new insults from Horm, and I understand he does more important things in his business life (which grants him ample free time to play with us cretins, it seems). The others posters I had any respect for have largely moved on by now, and this isn't one of those retirment posts where I congratulate my old friends and rivals.

No, as a whole I pretty much think this board needs to be locked up for good. It's a detriment to society in its current state. Sadly, loud-fingered posters would take their vapid diatribes elsewhere were it to vanish. For the good of the EMarr community, it must remain. Flypaper strategy, indeed.

It's hard to end this post, mostly because I'll be severing my one remaining tie with EverQuest, as tenuous as it might be. All good things must come to an end, and EQ was perhaps the best thing to happen to my life so far. I remember it, and this board, fondly.

Ares out.

Wow, I didn't expect to see a compliment in there. Thanks, and good luck out there.

Have fun running for city council or whatever it is you are doing to make a difference. No one ever said politics were hard, and some of us have helped people run for office during our time posting on the boards here. Glad you realized you can actually do something instead of just posting. Good luck!

Well, if you think this is a waste of your time, more power to ya. Posting on here doesn't mean you have to put off doing something important, though. I could write an essay about how I feel about this board, but I'll some it up in these words: all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

It is sad to see someone go with whom you can actually have an intelligent discussion, even if I'm not regarded as a keen mind :P. What can I say? I like a little shit-slinging, too.

Oh no no no, i wasnt being sarcastic, Ares is the smartest person here. he and the other SV geniuses of old solved all of the world's problems with their super smart and witty retorts! It was incredible to see! Now that he is leaving there will be no gods of smartiness on this board anymore. Us luddites will be clueless on how to ever survive. Please dont leave ares, we need you, really dont go, you are so smart and teh funn33z you must simply stay put to guide us in our lives .

You put in a lot of hard work and have earned your message board retirement. I just hope the pension is enough to get by on.

Take care man- shame to see a good liberal walk away. I agree with some of the stuff you said (which in some ways hearkens to Rheaton's departure- while I certainly had it out with him regularly, he left the board because ultimately it was simply a source of stress and frustration, and I think he's probably better off for it)- this place has become more and more of a cesspool over the years. But it's *our* cesspool, and despite the fact that I know it's probably bad for me, I still like swimming here a few times a week, even if I do it less than I used to

Please, Ares, don't leave. I actually LIKE reading what you write. As close as I am to leaving..../sigh...don't let Drysdale's pompous self-righteousness be the main reason.

I don't think we actually ever debated on anything Ares but, even when I disagreed with you I still enjoyed reading your posts. Good luck.

You've tempted me into a final post. Mostly, just to satisfy Brig's request. I can't leave the board without leaving my legacy, can I?

Chuk can still, to paraphrase a musical genuis, point that fucking finger up his ass. <3 Chuk.

And Zzapp, you might want to read what I read more carefully. It's not just people like Drys who've made me realize this is all a waste of time.

I'd love to leave by instigating an all-out flamewar and then just walk off, but I can't really be bothered. I have the ammunition to do it, and the time to work up the vitriol, just no motivation. Like I said, it's become a pointless exercise here.

My truly final bow; the "hidden scene after the credits" so to speak. The porn girl sig you all know and love.

Apathy and Atrophy. Erosion of the will. Do you think you will do better
against a small minded civic leader who merely wishes to know before anyone else, how redistricting will effect property values?

On the local level, money dominates ALL issues.

I dont know you Ares. I do know that I have replied to you at various
times, however I cant recall what the issues were. I didnt know you were
'liberal' until someone called you that here. Whatever values such labels have.

We all do what we must. Entropy exists, as I have said before.
We all age, and move on.

But the forum is hardly the sandbox you portray it. More goes on here than is stated. We are a representative democracy because people are far too lazy to actualy think about issues. That is the grim truth.

Perhaps you will do well. I hope so.
