Just think of all the money they could have saved by faking all of the Opening Ceremony.

When Grand Fenwick finally gets to host the Olympics, they'll just release all the footage via YouTube, and let the countries argue over what's real and what's fake. Gold medals for everyone!

Actually, the fireworks were set off for real in China. They couldn't figure out how to catch them all on video without endangering helocopter pilots however so they CGI'd them for all of us not able to be there in China.

the real reason is the smog is so bad people would not have been able to see them so they set some off to make it seem there was lots of fireworks going off.

and then said shit like yah the chopper was in danger. yah like the chopper pilot is going to fly into the flak explosions.

Apparently, Axgar was there, since I haven't heard that particular story on any news outlet... he must have had a first hand view.

I'm amazed you can get to this site from your Chinese hotel...

Actually, I have heard that on some of the radio news programs as well (The whole smog and danger thing.)

The latest ... the little girl singing was LIP-SYNCHING to another girl's voice. The singer had crooked teeth, and was considered not perfect enough for the ceremonies!!

Doesn't this all in many ways seem to be a blatant attempt to buy legitimacy on the world forum? Spending $40 BILLION on the Olympic games, putting a 7 year program in place to "ensure" they would win in mens gymnastics ... doesn't this seem like a flashback to the cold-war era??

A typical pyrotechnical blast can be heard miles away. I'm pretty sure airspace in a pyrotechnic display zone is a foolish place to fly.

With hundreds of fireworks exploding in that area, you are going to get hit. My understanding is the stuff uses TNT. If a chopper still flies after a coupla hundred sticks of that TNT go off that's only because all of its tiny remains haven't hit the ground yet, and they are still falling today.

Yes, Americans NEVER lip synch! We are perfect!

Of course they want to make themselves look good... every country that hosts the olympics every 4 years tried their damndest to make themselves look good... that's the point of it all... that is why countries beg and barter and plead to get the olympics... so they can show off how good they can manage it all.

The Olympics are generally a grossly contrived set of deceptions, regardless of host country. Once every four years a committee of snake oil salesmen get to produce an event that is 99% sizzle, 1% steak. Every once in a while one of them gets to govern a small New England state and embark an ill-conceived presidential run.

I want to enjoy the Olympics, but I remain wholly unmoved

That swimming relay was pretty incredible though.

LOL ... I never said, and don't think I implied even, that the whole thing isn't one big TV production. It is just freaking me out the lengths to which they are going. It's not about the "enhancements", it's about the obsession with perfection - supposedly one sequence had people practicing for 3-4 months EIGHT HOURS A DAY! I get the fact that as a socialist country they get to do what they want with their people ...

Athens is estimated to cost 12 billion in U.S. dollars and London (2012) is being estimated at 9-10 million pounds or 17 plus billion US at today's rate (google is your friend,) so it really is somewhat incongrous, especially since major portions of their population are desperately poor ... but they are autonomous, so call it sour grapes on my part.

So about 1/2 of what China spent... but when you consider that China is on target to overtake us as the number one manufacturer on the planet (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/2aa7a12e-6...nclick_check=1) and is rapidly increasing their position in the world market... while Britain seems to be going the opposite direction (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7552336.stm) it's not hard to see how easy it would be for China to invest more than Britain.

EDIT: As far as the 8 hours a day 3-4 months thing... how much do you think the atheletes spend working their way to the olympics... I'll give you a hint... it's a lot more grueling than that!

Missing my point(s) ...

Point 1 - it has been (up until China) a game of precentage increase by host country every four years ... looks like more than inflation, but offhand not more than 10s of percents per Games. China will blow eeryone away probably for the next 5-10 sets of games once you adjust for inflation. Nothing wrong with this on face value - the country obviously can afford it - my point being that they can afford it while tens of millions of their people still are living subsistence lives because China is what it is politically. So be it.

Point 2 - Look at it this way - they basically built a work force for 4-5 month where all it did was practice one routine (not sure of the total numbers involved) for a one night performance of a few minutes. Athletes pinnacle of success are the Olympics, but every athlete doesn't train JUST for that. Once again, pointing out the lengths to which they are expending their resources on these games. It could have been like the '30s where we had the government work camps and these folks weren't doing anything anyway, but they COULD have been working in factories or on farms etc. as well.

All I am saying is that while they is nothing inherently EVIL in any of this, the seriousness at which this geopolitcal entity is taking this whole "Games" things should make one take pause at to what else they would do if their world reputation was at stake.

Well, something to consider with both China and India is that "unskilled" labor is very cheap (and to a large extent, anything that can be done to gainfully employ folks is a win for everyone involved - especially the government).

It's funny that you mention Chinese and work camps toghether... who would ever put Chinese in camps!?

All I'm saying is that everyone who hosts the olympics tries their best to make themselves look as good as they can... China has more resources both in money AND in manpower than most anywhere else in the world... of course they are going to use it.
