Cool What is a Ranger?

this may get moved to the Rants area.. but i'll post here for now.

Copied from Eqrangers.com

_________________________________________________________

What is a Ranger?

Some ignorant people call us "paper tanks" or make jokes, like
"A Ranger zones into the Bazaar: Loading.. please wait"

Of course these all referr to the fact that we don't last long in a face-to-face melee battle.. and they're right. because that's not our place, any more than a Rogue or Monk.

We're not built to "Tank".. plain and simple.
So what is a Ranger, if he/she is not a tank?

Rangers are, given the proper circumstances (room to work & a real tank who knows what they're doing), the most Massive source of Consistant & UnEnding DPS (damage per second) that Everquest has ever known.

Consistant DPS?
Yes.. I mean we can maintain our rate of damage without worrying about running out of mana, or being close enough to the target to gain agro.

With Endless Quiver and Archers-Mastery(3) Advanced Abilities.. we are the most leathel hybrid class alive. Able to snare & root our targets, heal ourselves, increase ourown runspeed (sow) and direct damage.

Our game is Hit and Run
Don't expect us to stand and fight..
we're not cowards, we just know better
after all.. we're not tanks

Stupid enough to challenge us to a duel?
If you can't catch us.. you can't win.
If you're a melee class and get snared.. surrender, it's over.
We will out last you
Able to launch arrows while running, while you have to stop to cast, or catch up to us to melee. and if you stop.. you're in trouble.. we can shoot arrows outside of your casting range and we do double damage against targets who arent moving.

So, to all those people who call us "Paper Tanks" I say this..
If you're so good, why did you ask us to tank in the first place?
It's not our place to Tank.. You know it, we know it..

Now to quote "The Rock".. Know Your Role, and SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!

/bow

interesting post you have there.

Rangers in general can be nice to have in a group But there are many who dont play the class to efficiantly.

As a tank I see many rangers trying to increase their proc rates knowing I have already tossed out my incite, Why do they do this? They must want the agro is all I can assume and the nick name of "Speed Bump".

I not to long ago as some know had a 65 ranger in BoT as me the warrior if any named where up soon after that this ranger who was not the puller grabs a bunch of mobs and gor group trained, He earned the name Mr Ebay. its examples like that I see more of in game than the smart and good ranger.

Yes you get some 30% attack bonus and have a higher DPS than warrior but you knowing that should also know if you out proc us in a group you will die.

As for PvP it all comes down to gear now, ive had many rangers back down from me after they run OOM trying to snare me, I have my resist gear on me always and many other items with clicky effects.

I can Blind, AE, DD, DoT, self sow unlimited no regant, self invis, see invis, and soon ensare well can now but save those for emergencies, and summon arrows.
My point being if the AAs are close in range and both have good gear you end up with a long fight where the ranger can only win if their spells land.

I know if I see true shot go off im stone walling right away lol

Rangers are not tanks, your just a 2K HP Rune for the mob to get through on its way to the tanks hehe jk

Bahhh

I enjoy playing my Ranger… to me that’s all that matters… I enjoy the versatility of the class.

We, for whatever reason, often seem to have the a number of “paper tank” jokes made ( /em shrug ) … whatever. I know how fast / slow I drop compared to a plate tank or other classes. I know in some cases I have & can tank, others I’m dead before my health bar is past 50% and still others when I’m used to control a mob to get into positions / slow / debuffed & hand it off to a tank by using WS or even as a sacrifice. Hey that’s the fun of the game.

As to the “weak” rangers I remember also getting dinged because we can still solo as compared to other classes… perhaps not as efficiently as others… but we still can and get snubbed from some on that…

As to the power of a class … IMO there is so much more that effects the “power” of an individual more so than just “class”. To me 90% of it depends on the person, equipment and ever since AA’s its harder to judge by just level as that spectrum has opened up due to AA abilities.

I will say that I enjoy and respect all the classes and the powers that those classes have and bring to the group. I will take a better player any day over making the “perfect” group by class.

As to shitty players… heck there are shitty players out there.. be they Ebayed, borrowed accounts, or just bad players… or even the good/fair player that had a bad day… however through consistency reputations are made and broken. For each story of a Ranger training or being poorly played I am sure examples could be given about a Paladin in BoT, a warrior in OS, Monk in LDoN…. Its endless.

Just my thoughts

Im proud of the ranger jokes. Well, occasionally, they get under my skin, but mostly they reflect envy, and the fact that rangers are the class that pinch hits and either saves the day or burns in flames.

People tease people who either are seen as so powerful that they need not fear repercussions. Or, they tease people who are so weak that there's no danger of repercussions.

And, those who persist in playing rangers must be in the powerful group.

Lastly, a ranger's ability to manage agro is what we are teased about most. It is our unique ability, and it takes experience and skill to be an expert at it. Indeed, the recent changes to warrior play were to add to the warriors some very ranger-like traits.

First, be patient and considerate, aggro management is a skill that changes every few levels for a ranger, and it takes some practice to get good at it.

Second, if I gain aggro, it is usually not my fault. Rangers dont have a little read out that says where everyone is on the agro list. We find out where we are with the direct evidence of whether we are being hit or not. I know what I am doing to either increase my agro or decrease it, but it is hard to know what the tank is doing. I know it is even more of a pain for a tank to taunt away or otherwise keep the mob angry, but that is YOUR job. Do it!! And, be patient, with the ranger who is doing his job, who at a moment's notice may need to peel a mob off a cleric. (Clerics who are even better at gaining aggro than rangers =P)

As a 54 ranger, Im still learning my job. And, I must thank all of those who patiently taught me about when and when not to snare, etc.

And, Im looking forward to learning more archery soon. heehee

Actually, it's your job to manage agro, along with rogues and monks. A tank, in theory, can fail taunt multipul times. A ranger, on the other hand, does NOT have to imbune their weapons will spell procs. They have the choice to cast those spells or not, tanks don't have a say whether their taunt fails or wins.

Just thought I'd clear that up

Oh, now you've made me post the song...

Rangah's Paradise
- Parody of Coolio's "Gangahs Paradise"

As I walk through the Faydark
where I started this play
I wonder where my path leads
could this be my last day..

That's such a down thought
for a Ranger like me
No one told me this world
had so much to see

From Surefall's Sacred Glade
to Thicket's great Wall
From Katta's gothic city
to Felwithe's marbled halls

We travel the wood, city streets
and forest vales
We Stalk the forest wild
and spin our favorite tales

Friend and ally met
and gladly fight by their side
bows drawn, arrows fly
as they take their last ride

I'm the kinda rangah
little elves wanna be like
with Swiftwind and Earthcaller
scoring crits in the moon light

We've been spending most our lives
Livin in a Ranger's Paradise..
Fletched Arrows once or twice
Livin in a Ranger's Paradice..
It's long days and countless nights
Livin in a Ranger's Paradise..
Trainin hard and sacrifice
Livin in a Ranger's Paradise..

Keep your eye on the mark
chargin into the dark
Trackin 'cross forest green
hardly ever seen

Light on my feet
never run in defeat
pulling back, snar'm hard
rootem down, never retreat

Adventures call us far
no matter how long we roam
A sacred voice calls us
to come back home..

Hunt with Pride and
dont be whinny
or else my brother i may have to
shoot and arrow in your hinney

Tell me how.. can you
be so down on us, we see..
calling us names.. is it jealousy?

We've been spending most our lives
Livin in a Ranger's Paradise..
Huntin Orc, put D'vinn on ice
Livin in a Ranger's Paradice..
Foraged food and water's nice
Livin in a Ranger's Paradise..
Tempt'm chance, we'll steal her dice
Livin in a Ranger's Paradise..

Time after Time
Quest after Quest
Arrow after Arrow
Best of the Best

First one In
Last to leave the scene
A flurry of arrows
flash o'steel, blur of green

A trial in flame
People speaking my name
An epic fight fought
In the darkest of night

They said I'd lose
was the path that i choose
nothing more can i state
Proudly accept my fate

We've been spending most our lives
Livin in a Ranger's Paradise..
Fletched Arrows once or twice
Livin in a Ranger's Paradice..
It's long days and countless nights
Livin in a Ranger's Paradise..
Trainin hard and sacrifice
Livin in a Ranger's Paradise..

Tell me how.. can you
be so down on us, we see..
calling us names.. is it jealousy?

Tell me how.. can you
be so down on us, we see..
calling us names.. is it jealousy?

We've been spending most our lives
Livin in a Ranger's Paradise..
Kithicor's forest haunted at night
once a Ranger's Paradice..
The Stonewood Compound Bow is nice
Livin in a Ranger's Paradise..
Think we're weak? best think twice
when you cross into the Ranger's Paradise..

I dont think the multitude of ranger jokes out there has come from envy at all. It comes from the fact that the majority of rangers dont control their aggro. I am not sure who's idea it was to give rangers taunt, but 90% of the time there is no need for them to use it.

I have seen some of the best rangers, turn and peel mobs off myself (Enchy) or the Cleric, then turn back to doing their massive DPS. I have also seen Rangers fight for aggro with the MA. I have listened to rangers talk about how they can snag aggro from just about anyone. Whether that is true or not, rangers dont have the Hit Points to back it up for long for the most part. This attitude of "I have HUGE DPS and look I can out aggo the warrior" is what has given rangers the paper tank titles. Not people being envious of a rangers ability to solo...

And yes I do play a 60 something ranger.

Default Can't resist...

SOE gave rangers taunt so that they get aggro fast, then they can die and be out of the way for real damage to take place.

I was about to flame back at some of the replies here, but I'm growing tired of the "Rangers Suck" wars.. so I'll just leave it with this...

We've all met players of every class who simply suck.. suck bad..
And we all know players who've mastered their classes.. bravo!

If people would take the time to learn their class and understand the role of other classes in EQ, we wouldnt have these discussions.

So for all the times in the passed, present and future that someone calls me a papper tank.. I now say, thank you.. that's my job. I'm a Ranger.. a damned good one, and i'm proud of it.

Of course these all referr to the fact that we don't last long in a face-to-face melee battle.. and they're right. because that's not our place, any more than a Rogue or Monk.

We're not built to "Tank".. plain and simple.
The irony here being that many groups doing Tipt/Ikkinz trials prefer a ranger over a knight to tank due to the fact that 14 (whatever ) seconds of invulernability is long enough to put a sizable chunk in whatever nasty you're fighting :P

Anyways, rangers got a pretty big boon with the DX9 patch, now that they can shoot cornered mobs I'd think rangers will once again be competitive end game dps (on raids anyways). Anyone done any parses with the jester shoe.. er I mean whatever the thing is from GoD?

As for XP groups, dps is dps... rangers have some useful utlity, but so does a rogue (for example) depending on what you're doing (and a similiarly equipped rogue should out dps a ranger by a not insignificant amount). The only reason I ever specificly look for a ranger is if I'm doing something with a charmed pet, then ensnare is pretty handy :P

I wish I had a point, but I guess i don't. Shouldn't post after 2 hours sleep!

What is a Ranger:

Tracker: Your guild wants to know if the Bastion of Thunder tower mobs are up, ask a ranger. Your LDON wants to know if any named mobs are up, ask a ranger.

Tanking: You want the enchie to live to see another mob, ask a ranger. You want the cleric to live to heal the MA for the next mob, ask a ranger. Your MA just went LD, ask a ranger.

Healing: Your druid healer just went LD on a 4 mob pull, ask a ranger. Your cleric derives great pleasure in seeing another member added to his purple club, ask a ranger. Your cleric is in the middle of a CH cast on the MA and the enchie’s mez just broke, ask a ranger.

Buffing: The level 12 warrior asking for sow in POK because Gore eat him in DL while trying to twink himself, ask a ranger. The constantly pestering rogue saying his attack/strength is too low, ask a ranger. The necro crying about regen, ask a ranger.

CC: No mez, ask a ranger. Mage pet running around trying to kill its ‘master’, ask a ranger. Unslowed mob beating on a wizzy, ask a ranger.

DPS: need that mob who wants to only cast spells on the MA closer to the MA, ask a ranger. That pally is doing a great job holding arrgo but the mob isn’t exactly dieing, ask a ranger. Need someone who isn’t going to suck up healing mana, ask a ranger (applies primarily to EQ/AM3 rangers w/ sufficient LOSJ). Need a good old-fashioned melee beat down on a mob, ask a ranger. Need non-arrgo inducing burst dps, ask a ranger.

Pulling: need that one mob admist a cluster to die, ask a ranger. Don't have a monk or bard indoors, ask a ranger. Need mobs to be chain-pulled, ask a ranger

Rangers fill a lot of roles none more important than providing DPS. Though not the best class in any one category, they have the ability to fill-in in any given situation at just about any time. On almost every raid wipe I’ve been on, rangers are consistently the last classes standing before being eaten. I’ve also been on raids where the only people remaining alive were 2 rangers and a necro (which is why I always have an EE on me now).

Arrgo management: This is truly where the negative reputation originates. From level 46 to level 60, the ranger class evolves around learning arrgo management. The process prior to the introduction of AA’s made many a fledgling ranger decide they wanted to play another class. Starting around 46 the combination of weapons, attack rating and modifies, coupled with sometimes a lack of downright common sense (i.e. stand behind the mob) significantly increase the rangers ranking on a mobs hate list. Combine this with a lower attack rating and modifier, weapons that likely don’t have hate inducing procs, taunt that is not maxed because of level or failure thereof by the MA. The last item is a mob beating on the ranger, because the ranger is going down in HP at least versus that stupid warrior who keeps getting healed (mob thinking: ‘I’m so gonna kill that cleric next’). At 51 and 54 jolt comes into play, though goodness forbid if your two or three levels higher than the MA, because otherwise you’re going to be spending most of the time casting jolt to keep arrgo on the MA. Jolt can also have the unintended consequence of instead of putting arrgo onto the MA, onto the enchieL. Learning how and when to use these spells effectively without killing anyone is difficult at best and a party CR at worst. Epic haste can add a further element of consideration, especially in the high 40’s low 50’s and it would be downright disheartening if you also have epic slow as the arrgo generation of earthcall is insane at all levels (a sword to be bagged as soon as possible for this reason alone, and to be only pulled out in emergencies).
