Winners please see me in the bazaar for your prizes, and thanks again everyone for participating! Took me all damn night to decide (well actually I've been deliberating for over a week!), there were so many beautiful entries, lol.

This is very disappointing. Spiderling, I'd like to hear what you have to say about this:

Hail,

Dang, who would have guessed!
Despite the blatant cut & paste of the vah shir figure and obvious color-coverup job, I think Spiderling was still within your rather loose rules. Did Spiderling draw the cat you just linked (which wouldn't be as bad imo)?

Rules: Create an artistic representation of Lamewl...she can be attending to her sparkly bazaar boutique...lounging on the luxurious cushions in her posh Shar Vahl condo, enjoying a little catnip...preparing to pounce on an unsuspecting passing lizard tail...or use your imagination. If drawing cats isn't your thing, you can instead draw a brunette chick (purple eyes, like Lamewl's) in a kitty costume. Saucy is good, but nothing lewd, please. Here are a few representations of characters similar to Lamewl that have been done in the past:
Next contest specify all artwork must be original.
By modifying an existing vah shir drawing Spiderling did create an 'artistic representation of Lamewl', albeit he cut alot of corners. Heck, even someone as non-skilled as I could have turned that cat listening to the CD player into Lamewl.

It was a nice thing you did setting up the contest Trader Kitty. Sorry someone found a loophole.

Take care,

Wow...and considering the name of the original kitty...kinda makes it ironic =)

Frekkels,

It is not the rules of my contest that were violated, it is copyright law itself. No, a work does not have to be registered with the copyright office to be protected by the copyright laws (it just makes it easier to press charges). You cannot take, modify, and publish someone else's work without their explicit permission. You most certainly cannot do so and claim it as your own. Before anyone brings up screenshots--sony gives all subscribers a limited license to use its copyrighted graphics to create fan art.

But above all, it's totally unethical, particularly when you are using the work to enter into a contest for a prize. Unless Spiderling is the artist of the original itself, then I will ask for his prize back to award to someone else.

Although I suppose I should've known better, I did not think I would have to put anything in my contest rules about not violating copyrights or claiming someone else's work as one's own. :/

All the entries were superb... I have to say though that Kyris's impressed me the most.

Default *Pictures

I traced the picture you saw on a piece of paper. I added the wand and drum. I scanned it in. I colored it, I chainmailed it, and I gave it the life you see on there.

Yes, I used the outline to do so. Many of the other people there just used screenshots to make their pictures. Sashia, Moogs, Thalf... didn't even bother to really change them except with photoshop.

As for using the outline of someone else's work, I'd like to say that the picture result you see is partially mine... I colored, sweat, drew, scanned and worked to make it into lamewl.. I spent over 20 hours back and forth with lamewl doing more changes to make it look nice.

I'm sorry I didn't know about copyright laws, won't happen again.

As I stated earlier, sony has given subscribers a license to use screenshots in fan art...and I posted those screenshots up myself in the original contest thread. None of the artists were taking credit for the screenshots as their own work.

You have to put yourself in the artists' shoes...for most people, it takes working hard on an original piece themselves and then finding it edited and completely without credit being given on some other site for it to hit home. If you had drawn something from scratch, put it on the internet, and then found it on another site, modified and with someone else taking credit for it, how would you feel?

Most artists don't mind at all if you use their work as inspiration, and many don't mind if you trace their outlines as long as you ask permission and give credit. I have never personally been a good enough artist for anyone to want to use my work, but I have had close friends who have had it happen to them and they felt very much like someone had stolen something valuable from them :/

I can certainly understand not being all that familiar with the "rules" of copyright, borrowing art, etc...I was once there myself, when I first started making sigs. I didn't know that I couldn't use Amy Brown fairies or Dawn drawings in my sigs, particularly since "everyone else was doing it," until I found out later that it is not only against copyrights but is very unfair to the artists. I'm glad that now you understand and are going to email the artist (see post below this one).

Hopefully everyone has learned something here and maybe some other aspiring EQ artists will think twice next time before using someone else's work without permission. It's really all about putting yourself in someone else's shoes, no matter how remote they are, and asking how they would feel.

Default Other artist

I'm personally emailing that picture to the artist himself as I type this... and am going to let them know what was going on here.

joerandel64@yahoo.com is his email address and
http://www.jabarchives.com/joerandel/ is his website. (not for children, the word "pornish" doesn't even begin to cover it)

Sorry for not knowing about the rules about pictures, won't happen again.

Hello there. I see here you state that I used a screenshot to create the picture. The background itself was a sreenshot of the bazaar. I thought it would be appropriate to place the picture I drew into the bazaar seeing as how that is where Lamewl spends most if not all of her time.

The sign behind Lamewl was created from scratch and placed into the background behind her character as well.

The main picture was penciled in, inked, then colored in Photoshop. It actually took me a looooong time to find a spot in the bazaar which was: empty, and supported her pose realistically. I kind of took that part of the project as "digital photography if you will."

Again, the screenshot was part of my overall concept. I hope you understand that there was alot of thought put into the overall picture and not just placing a screenshot for the heck of it.

Take care,

Furry fan art makes me want to poke out my eyes with a spoon.

Why a spoon? Because it'll hurt more.
