Default need some help

on my old computer (its a hewlett packard, about 3, 4 years old, with Windows ME on it) i went to update all of the windows files. i did that, and then restarted my computer.

when i did that, the start up screen came on (one with windows ME in pretty letters), it stays there for about a minute, and the the screen goes black and it tries upgrade something about 100 times but it cant, anyway this is what it says

Windows could not upgrade file %1 to%2
1%: 2%

i dont have a clue what the hell that means... or how to fix it. anyone able to help me out?

thanks

This article appears to assume you can boot into safe mode. If you can't get into safe mode tap the F8 key while rebooting. This will allow you into the bootup options menu. Select command prompt. When you are at the C:> type in dir c:\wininit.ini /a /s once it locates wininit then type in ren C:\windows\wininit.ini wininit.old . Then reboot as instructed in the Knowledge base article. Fair warning I did this and then had to refresh re-install Win ME. The article doesn.t warn you about that. So make sure you have your WinME disk available.
