And this is precisely why you don't tell them to "take it or leave it", you give 'em the "because I said so" routine. Besides, if the kid wants to leave, let 'em leave. Maybe once they realize how good they have it, they'll realize they aren't as opressed as they think.

Having respect and showing respect are two totally different ballgames. I always had the utmost respect for my mother, but when I was growing up, I snapped at her sometimes, or used an ugly tone, and that was highly disrepectful. As for presentation, well...without being there, it's hard to say how you put things when talking with your parents, so I can't really comment on this specifically. I'll just say that I concur with some of the people here in that your tone makes a huge difference on how what you say is taken.

The funny thing is, my parents had to chase me out with a stick... and I keep coming back anyways! hehe

Seriously, I am apparently mentally retarded or something, cuz I never did think I knew more/better than my parents... well, except that one disagreement about palomino vs. champagne and the effect of the CR gene in horse color genetics... which I won btw... but I had the benifit of 40+ years more modern research in the subject on my side 8D
