Default Fire! new 2br unit for me

On June 7th last Saturday morning, my single bedroom ministry duplex was visited by a terrible fire with loss of life. The adjoined next door Sudanese family's small improvised shanty caught alight in their privately enclosed yard. The family lost a 24 year old brother, who died sleeping inside his makeshift 'bungalow' constructed from found materials (including a plastic tarp and weathered fencing pales). The entire enclosure became an inferno and it now resembles a vacant small corner in darkest hell confined.

Heat buckled metal sheet cladding comprising the fence bordering our property line with the local police station. It was 4 am, news video

"The Age" news report
Herald-Sun news report

There is no Line-of-Sight through the shared laundry outside from my kitchen window to their yard annex, but I called State Emergency Services on 000. The signs of disturbance suggested something dire with all the commotion I heard outside ..I cannot convey fully my chill and fear: briefly, there was a loud bang, and just when I had convinced myself it was a ways off further out in the 'burbs there was another that made me duck, suddenly I could not kid myself that there was no problem. That was a very scary moment, my friends. Momentarily, my eyes had began burning and the air a little smoky inside my flat.

Suffice it that I say the beat of divine Wings rushing in could have been real in the eerie moments that followed calls to SES. All Emergency Services appeared on the scene, while time stood still, over a period that later appears to have been only moments: at least 4 firetrucks, at least 4 ambulance and a mobile intensive care/para-medic unit, any number of police squad cars.

I declined television comment, but did give a full brief to the papers, coverage appeared on television and press nation-wide. I can tell you I wasn't evacuated... no source for that newsreader bs here and I'm the tenant next door over to the left of street scene.

Detectives interviewed me inside and took my statement. I presume they interviewed everyone. The authorities are saying it doesn't appear to be suspicious, but that they're keeping an open mind. A forensic team has combed the scene. Everything that was once in that little yard is thickly charred and blackened, everything; it only lasted minutes in the fire. That flames could bank so high, burn so fiercely, like a blowtorch swept every inch of it as a living human being slept - it seems suspicious enough for me.

Government department of Human Services is re-housing me so it can demolish the duplex, something which it had sidelined for years. My neighbors have already left, maybe that's what the newsreader meant.

Arson squad detectives are still investigating... their finding will go in the Coroner's report and I'm probably going to testify to an Inquest if the authorities do determine cause for suspicion. This is not how I wanted to make news.

Keep your powder dry, I'm coming through this without a strike against me I promise.

No update on Coroner's Report yet ..moved into new unit on 29th JUNE - cavernous lounge room, single car garage, front and rear yards and on same street for same rent (one suburb away). My neighbors are medicos, both sides;, and there's a gas station 2 doors down on the corner, a small shopping strip with French Bakery, Chocolatier, gourmet Pizzeria, Post Office, Milk Bar, Fish & Chips, Hair Salon, French Restaraunt, Manchester, Cafe and other neat stuff a stone's throw away. Quieter traffic.

Seems I'm in a local hospital stamping ground. Lots of specialists 'n stuff line the street here.

I'm glad you're OK man. Sorry to hear about your neighbor.

I did like them, Drys. Scorch lifted their wall's roofing tiles, and some of the timber fascia has now fallen away, the timber underneath burnt too, so fire nearly got into our duplex rafters from their end.

We hadn't been getting along awhile over the laundry - they kinda used it all the time and I hadn't got a lot of washing done for months. I never hid that from the cops or Press, thing is it was raining that night so there's really not a lot of random factors why what might have happened did happen: weather leaking onto electrical appliance, or accellerant. Bad luck or artifice with malice. They had a portable bbq oven, I don't know if it was fed by a gas bottle but honestly how does a fire bank up enough in the rain; I've never seen 'copious' volumes of plastic burn before, and really didn't see this fire from inside my flat (and behind our laundry shed).

Horrible way to die... I didn't really know her brother at all.

Yeah, dying in my sleep surrounded by loved ones is how I want to go... In about 50-60 years.

Death by fire is about the most horrible way I can think of, impalement included. Hopefully it was quick for the poor guy.

I'm not sure how religious you are, but I put a call out to my friends to pray for your next door neighbors. You too, although your loss wasn't as great. I'm sure it still hurt to some extent.
