View Full Version : Classes
Logical 11-10-2003, 06:39 PM What class is everyone? I see a lot of humes and elve melee people running around. Never see any White mages ... Black mages do a ton of damage ... red mages seem like a cross of white mages and black mage, but I can't decide if I like that.
What class is everyone?
Siggy 11-10-2003, 08:09 PM I'm a tarutaru BLM....course I haven't leveled up much, cuz my wife is a damn computer hog /shrug But it's been alot of fun =D
I normally am against doing the whole caster approach...I've always been a melee kind of guy, so this is different, and I like it alot =D
TipaDaKnife 11-11-2003, 04:08 AM Monk 15/Thief 5/White Mage 4.
Once I get to 18 with monk (chose it for soloing ability), doing subjob quest and becoming a white mage/monk subclass. If I get to 30 with that, making white mage a subclass and going bard or beastmaster as main job. I've been a cleric, being a pure healer is a mixed blessing - always get groups, but your time is never your own - and that seems very much more the case in FFXI, where healing power is concentrated primarily in white mage, with red mages, summoners, bards and paladins adding not a lot to that. Probably the one saving grace is that when you are dead, you can't search for a white mage to rez you.
DAoC had similar issues - in both, you can't rez yourself, so you as a rezzer almost ALWAYS take the experience loss that you save everyone else. FFXI has the most crippling experience loss of any game. In the high end EQ game, you almost never lose significant experience no matter what you do. You have three hours to find a rez, and you can log out for up to a week and get one six days later if you like. In DAoC, you lost a good amount of experience if you had to release, but you could return to where you died and get some portion of that back. Also, DAoC is a far smaller world that that of FFXI, and if you weren't in the middle of utter nowhere between realms, probably one of the two or three classes in your realm that could rez, would come by. All rez-capable classes get a decent rez for free at level 10 in DAoC.
FFXI has a one hour limit to find a rez, during which time you can't do a /sea to find a white mage. And even if you did find one, it could take an enormous amount of time for a white mage to get to you. Here's the kicker about experience loss. Experience given is based on your relative level to the monster. An even con monster gives 100 xp. At my highest level, 15, an even con monster will kill me easily. A decent challenge monster (gives 36-72 points) that has high defense or evasion will kill me. A decent challenge monster that has low evasion or defense MAY kill me, depending on what techniques I have up, whether I am full health, and how often my weapon procs. So most of the time I kill easy prey, which give 12-25 points per kill.
So. Level 1 takes 500 points to get through. You normally fight even or decent challenge mobs, so if you die (losing 50 xp), one kill will make up the loss.
Level 14 took me 3400 points to get through. That is about 135 kills total, and about 13 kills to make up the loss when dead. That's about an hour (and ten hours to get through the level solo). By the time I hit 25, and white mages get their first raise spell (returning 25% experience), each death could easily take a night of hard exp grind with no further deaths to recover from!
Anyway. That diverged a bit from the topic. One final note: In a group in Fort Ghelslpa, fighting even->tough monsters, in a full group, I made about the same experience as I would fighting easy-challenge monsters at the tough end of a newbie field.
I group with a red mage a lot, and I wish he would bind (root) the mob, poison and bio it, and then just med and keep me cured instead of running around meleeing it and causing downtime. I don't care if you have a sword; you have magic, I don't, all medding does for me is drain my TP.
What was the question?
Slayne 11-11-2003, 11:05 AM Elvaan WHM. Going to get 30 and go for Summoner.
TyriaEM 11-11-2003, 11:33 AM Same as Slayne, except replace Elvaan with Tarutaru
Reddoak 11-11-2003, 02:30 PM Mithra red mage.
Still undecided on what I'll end up subjobing. I could always toss in the
thief job I had been working on and level it up a little, but I was also
considering subbing a monk for more vitality... having a zombie knock
off 1/5 my life in one hit is really annoying at the moment :(
Gurglespit 11-12-2003, 04:06 AM I am a Galka I just hit level 30 in RDM and did the DRK quest.. so now I am a 1 DRK/1 RDM and will be a 70/35 soon ;)
Zelgadis 11-12-2003, 05:42 AM That level 1 Red Mage isn't permanent if you switch it off subclass, is it? ><
Reddoak 11-12-2003, 07:16 AM No, it's not permanent... when you switch jobs, your subjob is capped
at 1/2 your main jobs level. So if you had a level 30 red mage, then switched
it to a subjob with say Warrior as your main, you'd be 1 war/1 rdm. As you
advance in levels, you'd start to get access to more of the rdm levels until
you reach the point where the subjob reaches the original level the rdm was.
eg.
1 war/1 rdm
4 war/2 rdm
6 war/3 rdm
. . .
30 war/ 15 rdm
. . .
60 war/ 30 rdm
Namia 11-12-2003, 02:45 PM I got my bard up to lv 70. Being a bard, it's easy to get invited to groups. Now I'm playing as a red mage, because I want to wear the AF clothes :)
Azraelwrath 11-14-2003, 02:12 AM Hume RDM here. I'm level 12 at the moment and I've started on my fetich quest in the Palborogh mines. I was a 7 warrior before I switched off after I kept dying:P Right now I've almost got a full suit of scalemail (excluding the head) after selling lots of ores and goblin stuff at the auction house (which is awesome). So far I haven't had too much time to play because of homework. Dunno but Thankgiving break since I'm heading to my friends house and I'll see what we are going to do.
As for my future plans, RDM looks like something I'd like so I'm probably going to go RDM/BLM, PLD/WAR, or BST/WHM-RDM. Gonna raise rdm and war first and I'll see where I want to go from there. I'll see how grouping is before I take my pick.
Leveling is ssssssssllllllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww www.
I'd prefer Anarchy Online instead if they actually fixed something. I like fast leveling.
Gurglespit 11-14-2003, 11:37 AM get in a good group and learn how to Renkei and use all the rest of the tools given.. and chain even cons or better.. and you will be amazed at how fast you can level :)
Rosalie 11-23-2003, 05:48 PM Hume BLK with an eventual sub in WHM.
bobdz 12-29-2003, 11:27 AM Level 8 Human Monk named Ziagwa at 30 my plans *for the moment* are Samurai / Monk or Ninja / Monk
Everclear 01-02-2004, 09:35 AM 14 Taru whm, will probably sub summoner....Love the Tarus =D
Zelgadis 01-02-2004, 09:49 AM Over the holiday when I got my subjob quest completed I did what Tipa said he was doing. I'm a Galka monk and changed jobs to white mage and put my monk on Subjob. Had a lot of HP behind my main job! I levelled my white mage up to 11 before switching back to my monk, because my brother was levelling up into his 20's and I was still stuck at 18. He didn't want to level up any subjob until he got level 30 and summoner. I'm hearing lots of warnings about being a summoner job, but he seems to just shrug it off and say "All the japanese guys in my linkshell are going to help me get all my stuff once I get level 30!"
But being a 19 monk now with a subjob white mage restricted to 9 at the time is really helping me solo while I'm groupless. The ability to throw a Paralyze and Dia on a mob to pull it and an emergency 30 point heal can be handy (even though mobs can hit me for more than 30 in the time it takes to cast Cure if I'm not careful). For some reason, though, my MP is capped at 26 points, and I'm pretty sure it was like 52 MP at level 9 with a white mage main job. So I really only have either three cures, one nuke, or two enfeeblement spells and a cure.
I wonder how my stats would be like if I started levelling up as a warrior with a monk subjob and then switched back to my monk... I thought that I'd level up a little with the black mage and see if pairing that guy up with my white mage would help me very much with my MP supply. I know I grouped with a black mage who was a main white mage had a ton of MP while subjobing.
Personally... once I hit level 30 I want to go for a Samurai!
Gurglespit 01-03-2004, 09:29 AM I switched to Samurai a bit ago.. level 37 in it now.. awesome class.. I have alot of fun with it :)
TipaDaKnife 01-05-2004, 08:04 AM I switched to Samurai a bit ago.. level 37 in it now.. awesome class.. I have alot of fun with it :)
Samurais are cool.
And I'm a 'she' by the way.
I restarted a couple of times in different jobs. Currently white mage/summoner working on my RSE armor quests, missions (Rank 4 now and working toward Rank 5) and working toward doing my avatar quests for a future change to summoner/white mage.
My Japanese is getting a lot better.
Got monk to 30 and ranger to 26, but neither job really did it for me. WHM/SMN is a lot of fun.
Mithra all the way.
Zelgadis 01-05-2004, 09:03 AM I need to get help figuring out japanese. I've seen a few instances where American/Japanese groups conflicted with each others (Americans argueing over Japanese methods of loot distribution, or lot versus not-lot). I'm just now trying to get the auto translater thing to work, and it only works when the person uses it, not automatically works when the person types something in regularly. =/
Anyway, how about lending Chamzel a little more help? I'm up to Rank 2, but I don't know where to go for the next set of missions to progress to Rank 3 and up! I'm from Sand O'ria (but I found out that you can change your citizinship)... in Jeuno now trying to work my way into the higher level game at level 21 (man, how stupid the players suddenly become!)
Caharrin 01-12-2004, 06:10 AM What's up guys :p
Right now I'm a level 14 tarutaru white mage (Ifrit server). I'm gonna get to 18, level up black mage to 10 (or 15 if I feel like it) then go whm\blm to 30 and get summoner. In the end I'll be whm\summoner (healing with a hint of dps  ).
The only other road I would take would be whm\ranger. You would think taru couldn't be rangers due to their size, but in actuality they're only 2nd best to the Mithra - Taru have extremely high Agility, which is the only attribute you really need for Rangers. :D
I'm an Elvaan White mage.
:)
